Kalyan-Bhiwandi is renowned for its historical significance , with many hidden gems waiting to be explored. One such treasure is the Lonad Caves, also known as the Khandeshwari Temple due to the temple dedicated to Goddess Khandeshwari inside, which worshipped
by the locals.
This offbeat heritage site, surrounded by lush greenery. Tucked away amidst lush greenery and away from the bustling city life. The Lonad Caves, dating back to the 5th to 8th century AD, were once a significant spiritual hub for Buddhist monks. Despite some damage, the caves retain their historical charm.
The path to the caves is a blend of industrial and natural landscapes, with the right side revealing the rock-cut cave at the end of road. A beautiful Tulsi plant and a seat welcome visitors at the entrance. As you approach the cave, the sounds of birds fill the air, adding to the peaceful atmosphere. The caves provide a refreshing break from the summer heat. I’ve visited during both summer and monsoon, and in the latter season, there’s a small waterfall on the right side of the cave.
One pillar of the cave features a carving of Ganesh, while a small stone sculpture of MahishasurMardini can be found nearby. Though some carvings on the arch and ceiling have been damaged, they still retain their beauty. Two small water cisterns located outside. The water appears to be drinkable, but it’s best to bring your own.
Inside, there is a spacious prayer hall that can accommodate 30 or more people. Additionally, a small rock-cut cave with 2-3 steps leads to the temple of Goddess Khandeshwari and Lord Hanuman. The locals maintain the area with great care, Locals worship there daily and even offered us prasad during our visit.
There is a panel carved on a wall of cave at door way. I’m not an expert, but it appears that the person sitting on the stone is the leader, with the others acting as helpers and followers. If you have any insights, I’d appreciate your help in understanding the panel.
No dedicated food or water stalls at the caves or on the road to caves. It is advisable to carry sufficient water and snacks before visiting. Nearby towns like Kalyan and Bhiwandi offer various restaurants and eateries for meals.
The Lonad Caves are relatively undiscovered. These caves offer a peaceful retreat for those seeking a blend of history, spirituality, and nature.
