The Worldwide map edit walk was organized in Wellawatta, Sri Lanka by one of our own beloved and lovely Connect Moderator Ilankovan Thushyantha. Ilankovan is a member of the Sri Lanka Local Guides community and as well a moderator of some communities in Sri Lanka. He was one of the very first people to step up to as well host the event in his community. We thank you for your effort and support as well to this Worldwide event. Find below the highlights and recap experiences from Ilankovan below:
Ilankovan: A Meet-up was organized to support our friend HelloSamsonR on the “World Wide Map Edit Walk” theme. We the Sri Lanka Local Guides took this matter in our hangout and few of us decided to host the Meet-ups at our community. The Meetup was organized at 4.30pm on the 22nd of July and initially, I myself and AntanO were the only participants to attend. After a ten minutes of the walk, Someone new joined us looking at my Sri Lanka Local guides Tshirt. That person was @RuBen10 . Even though, he has not been a member of Local Guides community or the HO, he knew about our existence through social media. Catching up my post on some newsfeed he has decided to join us this time. Ruben told us that he has been using Google Maps during his travel for work related matters and also he has given some stars at times but he didn’t have a clear idea about how it functions. So we gave him a clear explanation of the Google Maps works as well as the Local Guides Program and he showed a great enthusiasm.
EXPERIENCES
This was my first time to host a map editing meet up in Wellawatta, even though I have been living here for the past few years. Wellawatta is one of the most populated areas in Colombo city. This idea clicked into my mind all of a sudden as I one day saw many places pinned at wrong locations, many closed businesses were still active and some business places were overlapping some other. Considering these, I decided to plan a meet-up and it happened. However, this was my first time to spend 1 and half hours to walk through only about 150 meters on an editing walk, hence there were many errors on the map and it was so confusing. We got our inboxes filling with so many notifications in a very short time. After having some fun flying the kite, we sat on a café, had some chat and snacks and returned home. This Meetup has been a significant one for me which gave way to initiate a new Local Guide community for Wellawatta which is the most needed in order to improve the quality of the map. What an interesting piece Ilankovan got there. Really inspiring as well. The Worldwide map edit walk edition as well was hosted in Sydney, Australia by Briggs Soria. Briggs is one of the Local Guides in this community that doesn’t leaves a stone unturned :). He is known for his brilliant mapping exercise and as well he went on adventure recently known as the Sydney Conquest. Briggs is favorably known as a Local Guide who loves to drop the pins and as well provide quality and accurate contributions to the Google Maps. He is also one of the numerous active and vibrant Local Guide of this community. Find below his highlights and experiences during the map edit walk.
Briggs: Basically, the day started with the intention of heading to the Sydney Olympic Park. But due to the amount of construction around the area, I decided to whisk my way through Parramatta Road all the way to Auburn. I covered a hefty amount of space, and made upwards of roughly 120 edits, uploading a total of about 160 photos and enjoying the time taken browsing through furniture and the scenery (or lack thereof).
EXPERIENCE
The day’s efforts in cooperation with the Worldwide Edit Walk has resulted in the conquistador of me covering massive parts of Sydney. It allowed me to impart a tip: map around the main roads. Parramatta Road (bar motorways/freeways) is considered one of the busiest roads in the Sydney metropolitan area, and with hundreds of reviews to the local restaurants and outlet stores, I made my mark and progress onwards!. Lol, Briggs is really an amazing person, is map editing walk was a frank and experienced one. Isn’t it? Lol it is. A big thanks to Fazeel Usmani for organising the Worldwide map edit walk in Hyderabad, India. Hyderabad is one of the biggest cities in India and such an event organized there was a big boost to help the accuracy of the Google Maps. Well done Fazeel and a big welldone to the other Local Guides who participated in this event you organize as well. Here are the highlights and recap experiences from Fazeel.
Fazeel:It was my first meetup as a host and I was eagerly waiting for this day. Thanks to Google for providing me with such an opportunity to explore my city with the fellow Local Guides. I was at the venue 15 minutes in advance waiting for others. Finally I found 1, Shaik Imtiaz Ahmed. By 03:15 PM, we were 5 and then we’ve decided to start the walk. While writing the names on IDcards, surprisingly more 7 local guides came at the place in no time. At that time, I felt this would be a great walk and I was dangling with joy. We started introducing by giving a brief introduction of our local guides programme and we shared current news about our program.
EXPERIENCE’S
We Checked and Mark the correct location of places on the Google maps. We Reported a place if it is permanently closed or duplicate of another place, if a place is spam (or) doesn’t exist. We
Filled up all the details on the Google Maps by asking the business owner when we noticed some details are missing. And we also encourage the business people to add photos of their businesses and as well Claimed their businesses on the Google Maps. After completing the walk we had some drinks at Swagath Restaurant. We enjoyed a lot and had a great fun. Thanks for attendees for making this walk memorable and funny. Special thanks to Abdulla Rehan & Fuad Qureshi, as they were cracking jokes all the time and making the atmosphere awesome in both the teams. We had a lot of fun…!!! What a great story and experience from Fazeel. His first meet-up as a host and 14 attendees, that’s really encouraging and inspiring to him to as well make more meet-ups in an effort to make an impact in his community and beyond. Thanks to brilliant Level 10 Local Guide Victor Omebije for taking the Worldwide map edit walk to Zaria. Your sincere and immense contributions to this Worldwide event is amazing. Victor covered a distance of 18+ kilometers on this day just to make sure he make sure he made an impact in his community. It’s no wonder you are a Level 10 Local Guide. Well done Victor and keep up the great and good work you are doing for your community. Your contributions are are really making an impact in your community and beyond. Here are the highlights and recap experiences from Victor.
Victor: I have never had an opportunity such as this. The Worldwide Map Edit Walk was an Amazing time for Local Guides in the City of Zaria. The city of Zaria has very few Local Guides and for a while was very poorly mapped. I took up the challenge of Mapping my city and although I had a little achievement, my impact was limited. I came across a few Local Guides one after the other and it became a great experience. I met Yusuf-Yerimah, JoeDika and Emmanuel Ahmadu whom will be joining us on connect soon.
The walk commenced at 11:38am (Nigerian Time) and It was the first meet up for all of us but we were quite excited. During our Map edit walk we paid attention to Gas Stations and the warm reception we received from a largely conservative city was really encouraging.
EXPERIENCES
At one of the gas stations, it took the manager a while to understand what we were explaining so we simply took some photos, uploaded them and asked him to bring out his phone, opened Google maps, turned on his location and his satellite view and he was astonished to see his gas station on the Google Maps from his own phone. We then showed him the pictures we just snapped. In astonishment, he shouted “Kambalahi” (an exclamation of complete surprise). We went further to show him his village on the map and at this point, he was all ours. He gave us every information we needed and till this day, each time I stop by to refuel, its always a great time with the staff too.
We visited eight gas stations and uploaded many photos. We also added quite a number of other business and at least a school to the map.The meet up was so interesting that we terminated it at about 3:20pm and covered a distance of 18.2km. Before the end of the Meet up, Emmanuel Ahmadu Moved form Level 1 to Level 3 and is now more committed than before to the Google Maps. Zaria Local Guides are now more active than ever and with this team, and Meetups as this, our impact can be multiplied. I like to give special thanks to HelloSamsonR for the great initiative and to Osaka78 whose motivation engineered me to pull Zaria Local Guides together. Thank you Google.
Wow, what a great inspirational story. Keep up the good work Victor and the rest amazing Local Guides who came out to support you in order to make an impact in your community. Continue to make the voluntary contributions for your community and beyond. Thanks to the amazing Sergey Sudakovskiy for organising the Worldwide map edit walk in Moscow, Russia. Sergey is a community moderator for the Moscow Local Guides Community and as well a member of the Russian Local Guides. Sergey Recap meet-up post is still waiting for approval, hopefully his post would be released soon enough. So we decided to interview Sergey and he was able to give us some recap highlights and experiences of how his meet-up went.
Sergeysud: Three participants came to the meetup. We spent 3,5 hours on the streets of Moscow very productively, visited several dozen cafes and restaurants. We talked with several owners, and several of them became very interested about Google My Business.
We used all the functions of the mobile Maps app in order to add maximum information about all the business objects that we’ve passed. In total, about 30 objects were fixed. It was possible to answer questions for almost a hundred objects. Thanks for organising this worldwide map edit walk in Moscow, Russia Sergey. Millions are benefiting from the voluntary contributions you are making in your community. Keep up the good work and hopefully soon your recap post will be available.
