When introducing our “Paraguayan Soup” to a tourist, I usually explain it like: the only one soup in the world… that is solid!
The story says that one of the first Paraguayan Presidents used to like very much a soup that was made with cornflour and a lot of cheese and milk, among other ingredients. One day the housemade, put more cornflour than neccesary, but she didn’t noticed it until later. When she realized the mess she had done, she decided to put the mix in the tatakua (big oven made of clay, and is usually located in the garden). Obviously, the result was pretty much solid instead of liquid, but the amazing thing was that the president loved the new dish!
Since then, Sopa Paraguaya, is one of the most traditional dish in Paraguay. When people want a translation to understand it better, I usually tell this story because Paraguayan Soup is a unique dish. And everybody understands why is a solid soup!
