Padmini is indeed a beautiful sculpture displayed in the State Museum, Bhopal, and was obtained from Suhaniya. Sihonya, also called Suhaniya, a town in Morena, has many notable ancient monuments dating back to the 11th century AD. In the medieval period it was under the rule of the Kachchapaghata dynasty. This monolithic sculpture is sculpted from red sandstone is the centre of attraction in the sculpture gallery.
In Hindu scriptures, women are classified into four types based on their personality and physical beauty: Padmini, Chitrini, Shankhini and Hastini.
This exceptionally beautiful bust of Padmini with full breasts, missing arms and lower part below the breasts, appears to have been carved to adorn a royal palace.
The care with which the sculptor has carved it is beyond words. Broad forehead, mischievous eyes, wrinkles on lips, dimples on chin, smile on cheeks, two buns of hair on either side of the head, top adornment with jeweled ornaments, big earrings in ears, a three-strand attractive necklace around neck, pearl necklace hanging down from chest, bulging breasts full of grace, swanlike neck, bouquet of flowers in right hand which is placed on the shoulder, are expressing Padmini’s purity, beauty and grace easily. In fact Padmini is a beautiful, attractive and dignified woman.
This Padmini cannot be one of the thirty-six Yakshinis, the artist has made this Padmini, amazing, supernatural and attractive with the magic of his art.
