Padma Multipurpose Bridge, the highest-value project in Bangladesh
The under construction Padma Bridge is a multipurpose road-rail Bridge across the river Padma. The long awaited bridge will connect the Capital City Dhaka to the south-western districts of Bangladesh. The bridge is being constructed in two levels. The upper level will be for 4 lane high way and the lower level will be for single track railway. The bridge will be over 6 KM long and 18 M width having 41 spans to be installed in total. I noticed that 6 spans out of 41 have been installed by that time in August 2018.
In the last rainy season I visited Bagerhat, a south-west district of Bangladesh, for inspecting one of our clients Fisheries & Dairy project. While crossing Padma River through Mawa point, I observed the construction of the Mega Project is going on. I felt a bit excited as because this bridge will bring my home district Patuakhali, the land of beautiful rivers, more nearer in terms of time. It will also make the drive to Kuakata, the beach of Sunrise & Sunset, much quicker than it has been taking now. Sundarban, the great mangrove forest, a UNESCO world heritage, will be closer as well in terms of time due to Padma Bridge. It will also bring closer the Payra sea Port, being constructed in Patuakhali. It’s a clear indication of prosperity of this area by flourishing tourism, Industrial, Social as well as economic development to be taken place after completion of Padma Bridge. The bridge will serve the purpose of around 21 south-western districts of Bangladesh having 30 million populations who relatively under-developed, while the area is full of resources boasted with rivers, fishes, crops, beaches, forests etc.
The Padma River, known as Ganges in India, created from Gangotri Glacier of Himalaya, flowing through India and it renamed Padma while entering into Bangladesh through Chapai Nababganj and merged with the River Maghna at the Chandpur point and named again as Meghna before it flown into The Bay of Bengal.
The bridge is being constructed by China state-owned company China Major Bridge Engineering Company Limited, while Government of Bangladesh is the financer of the project.
The Government of Bangladesh is expecting that after completion of the Bridge it will boost up the GDP by 1.2%. The estimated cost to complete the project is USD3.9 Billion while the project is expected to finish within December 2020.
The dream will come true shortly and Bangladesh, the land of resources and land of rivers, will be a better place for tourism and business.
