Ownership and brand name change

Hi,

I have a dilemma… in genral like this:

Two restaurants are involved, A has closed and sold out the business and the location to B.

B had closed own restaurant two blocks away and moved into the local where A had its restaurant.

Now, B is running own business (own brand and everything in A’s local) since October 2020. I added the place 23rd of Oct 2020.

Yesterday Google Maps had the sign “permanently closed” for restaurant B, but showing the name of restaurant A.

Today the restaurant B is not even on the map.

How should this kind of problems be reported?

Best regards

Hii @I-am-Q actually you have merge a business and close the business too.

thats the reason you are facing this problem. so, its better to create a fresh listing of the present business which apear there. both of the earlier entry is deleted.

Generally, Local Guides should be cautious in these situations. It is better to leave it to the owners to fix it. When restaurants are traded a part of the deal could be taking over the goodwill associated with a Maps listing with lots of positive reviews. Or the owner wants to bring with him the positive reviews from his previous location.

If the owners are not aware of their listings it is best to reach out and learn how they would like the move implemented as a move or a closure + a new listing. And what they want should happen to the reviews left on the previous owner’s listing.

From a Maps Users standpoint, it is often best to start over with a new listing so old photos and reviews related to the quality of a previous owner get deleted.

Regarding your current problem, @I-am-Q I’m unsure what is best to do. Once a POI is deleted there is no backup as far as I know. This happens if it is removed with the “Does not exist here” option. But if the delete listing can be found via a text search and it is marked Permanently closed this can be undone.

So we should be very careful using the “Does not exist here” or “No public access” options. Should we make a mistake it is better if we used “Permanently closed” since this can be undone.

I need to know more and see the links / get the names+addresses to check further. And you need to figure out what the new owner wants.

All the best

The only way we can be sure what happened is to read the reviews and study the photos. Have you been able to do that? Your suggestion to start over is premature and might not be in the interest of the owners.

There are a lot of different aspects involved in this kind of situation, @I-am-Q , and it should be handled carefully, evaluating all of them, possibly “before” to act.

Generally speaking a business loves to keep reviews and photos, if the rating is high, or they like to get the ones of the previous business, if the rate of the other business is higher, but we need to consider what reflect more the reality, when making an edit.

Also the history of a closed business should be kept in Google maps, for the ones that are searching for it to be informed that the business they are looking for is no longer in there.

This means, first of all, that a merge should be generally excluded. A merge should be suggested only when we have multiple entry for the same business, @Saddam_1

Regarding B moving in A, I have a few questions:

  • Is B acquiring the ownership of A, maintaining the previous staff and products? In this case the appropriate option is: Name of A will be changed, while B should be "Permanently closed.
  • Is B moving the previous business inside the space where A was, with his own staff and products? In this case A should be permanently closed while the Pin of B should be moved on the new location. However this action can be misleading, as the old photos may be no longer related to the new location, as suggested by @MortenCopenhagen
  • If so, to avoid any confusion both A and B should be “Permanently closed” and a business C should be started, once the closure of the previous businesses is confirmed

This said, can you explain which action you took?

Thanks for your reply @Saddam_1

It is not a merge.
