Onion planting Location !!!

On my travels this past weekend I passed through this very interesting and cheering scene in Ghana. It’s an area in the southwest of the Volta region. It’s close to the Ghana-Togo border. It’s called Denu . Like most little cities and towns in west Africa,it’s located along the coast, very close to the sea.

It’s an area worth visiting. I love the onion farms here. There are planted in very nice rows.

They have a very nice system of operation also.

Onions Of course are an international and well known vegetables. The cultivation season takes about 90 days and they grow better in the cool season. It’s the coolest season of the year here in Ghana with temperatures as low as 20°. Note that for us here in West Afrcia that’s low enough but maybe compared to Europe or canada that’s nothing.

The onion farms are well irrigated as well. I really like the irrigation system in place.

A borehole system with a pipe going fairly deep into the ground with a hose attached. The hose is perforated and with he pressure of the water coming through it becomes inflated to water the farm. The second system is similar but it’s an upright pipe that sprays the water in all directions on the farm.

It was a fun filled weekend, back to work now in the city!!!

Have a good week ahead and cheers.

Thanks for this nice post with beautiful photos @SholaIB Onion is a kind of spice which is widely used in our sub continental curries. In our country we start planting onion during starting or just before starting of winter. This year we have a very bad experience with the price of oniion :grinning: :grinning: as it went beyond the capacity of the common people. Thanks for this post.

Hello @MukulR

Thanks for your nice comments. It’s one of the places I visited last weekend on my travels as I said. It’s very nice to look at though I didn’t get the pictures right :see_no_evil:

I just have to keep trying.

Thanks for sharing the beautiful photographs of onion plantation @SholaIB Here in Saudi Arabia because of the hot dessert climatic conditions, onion plantation is very difficult which is why they import onion from foreign countries with majority imports coming from Egypt (~60%).

Hey @fasi6083

Thanks for the nice comments. I suppose the very rich Nile and climate in Egypt iare very good conditions for the growth of onions. Hope you keep well and safe as always.
