About eight years ago, I started doing something that seemed very small at the time: taking photos of places and adding information to Google Maps.
It wasn’t part of a grand plan. I simply noticed that many local businesses, landmarks, and community places in my area were either missing from the map or had outdated information. People would struggle to find them, especially visitors or newcomers. So whenever I had some free time, I would stop, take a few photos, verify details, and contribute what I could.
What began as an occasional activity slowly became a habit. Over the years, it turned into a journey of exploration. Almost every week—or whenever an opportunity came up—I would visit different areas, discover places I had never noticed before, and document them for others.
One of the things I enjoy most is that this journey has allowed me to see my local community from a different perspective. I’ve visited small shops tucked away in narrow streets, local landmarks that rarely get attention, and businesses run by people who have served their communities for years. Many of these places had little or no presence online, yet they mattered to the people around them.
For me, contributing to Google Maps has never been just about earning points, badges, or statistics. It’s about helping people find places more easily, making local information more accurate, and ensuring that businesses and community locations are visible to those who need them.
Looking back after eight years, I’m grateful for all the places I’ve discovered and the people I’ve indirectly helped along the way. What started as a simple contribution has become a meaningful hobby—one that continues to inspire me to explore, learn, and give something back to my community, one place at a time.
