15 years ago, I went on a backpacker trip all by myself to western China and then travelled through a great part of that extraordinary country. I had many funny and weird experiences, among them was definitely this.
I had done some research on where to get dog as a meal. Here in Denmark a director made a movie called “In China they eat Dogs”, so it’s a subject of concern in my homeland. Therefore I had to experience it. So. I went to Anshun, which was (maybe still is) the main place for serving this kind of meal.
I found a restaurant street with several places that served dog (with counters with dead dogs facing the sidewalk) and chose one of them and waited for my “dog-hotpot”.
I enjoyed my meal, which was quite expensive (by Chinese standards.), and in the middle of it, the waiter came with the paws from the dog, but I had to make him remove them, because they kind of made me feel sick. I had no problems before and after the paws.
How did it taste. Nothing special, really, but with the soup, spices and vegetables, quite tasty.
In Denmark dogs are the most common pet, and most people LOVES dogs. So even if it is one of my favourite memories, this story is not one I use to boast.
