On the perpetual hunt for the best gluten free and vegetarian options

As a person who has had Celiac Disease since 1986, I have been on the perpetual hunt for gluten free food for almost my entire life. (If you would like to read a bit more about that, then please check out my about page on my business website, Adaptive Nourishment.) But to make things a bit more complicated, I have also been a vegetarian for over 20 years… Therefore, searching for food I can eat has consumed a large part of my existence.

Back in the 80’s and 90’s, finding gluten free vegetarian food was much more of a challenge. One that I succeeded at though, even while traveling in other countries. But, as gluten free became more mainstream, my life has become so much easier!

Restaurant Consulting

As a 20 year veteran food industry employee, I know just how difficult it can be to get gluten free food. Especially because most restaurant employees have no idea what gluten free even means, still to this day. Due to this, I have done some restaurant consulting for a few different local restaurants to assist with increasing their knowledge base. I do this, not only for gluten free ingredients and dishes, but anything related to food allergies or intolerances, as well.

It is extremely important to me to be able to find really good food that I can eat without getting sick. Because, I don’t know about you, but for me, personally, I am not a huge fan of being deathly ill for days.

My Google Maps Goal

Ultimately, my goal is to find some of the best food in the area, or anywhere I travel, that is gluten free and vegetarian. And I want for everyone else to be able to enjoy my great finds, which is why I am so passionate about sharing my gluten free finds on Google Maps. In this digital age that we are in, it creates a much smaller community and makes sharing and finding the things we want so much easier. If I can help just one person find a great gluten free meal, that won’t get them sick, then I feel good about my contributions.

If you have found some great gluten free vegetarian dishes in my area, then please share! Or if there is a restaurant in another area that you think I simply MUST try, then please pass along that info because I love to travel also.

Hi @ShanahBell , have you tried Fresh Levant Bistro? My co-worker was raving about the restaurant after her latest weekend trip to Raleigh.

Also, I love your passion and how it is fueling your work on Google Maps. My wife had severe food allergies for a while, especially while pregnant, and we had to vet so many restaurants that were gluten-free or plant-based focused. It was tough to do for sure.

Hi @JordanSB ! I have tried Fresh Levant and should have included them on my gluten free finds list. They are fantastic!

I am sorry to hear about the struggle you and your wife had finding good food, especially while she was pregnant. It can certainly be a challenge. But since we are blessed with so many restaurant choices, and new ones opening every day, we are pretty lucky with our selection with regards to food sensitivities.

Have her food sensitivities decreased since pregnancy, or did they remain with her after giving birth?
