Older Photographers sharing knowledge with Younger Photographers

Over the years I have noticed that when meeting up with fellow photographers for fun day shoots , or street shoots , its usually the 35 Plus Crowd , And as i get older ( I am 45 now ) I have noticed that there are hardly any younger Photographers . Its not even a question of the younger guys not been able to afford DSLRs , they are just not interested. I have and try and offer my younger friends on Facebook to come and shoot for a few hours on the street with me. I try my best not to be preachy , and funnily enough i learn allot from them as well. I love sharing my knowledge and show them how to see a photo before it happens , and be ready to capture that instant… So how do we get younger photographers to come and learn (and teach ) from us older togs ? I try at least one every 3 months to find one younger photographer to join me for a street shoot. And even if they don’t have a camera I allow them to use my one , under my supervision , and i place all their photos on my Google drive so that they can edit and access their own photos . What do you think of More Experienced Togs allowing younger photographers to shoot with them for a few hours every now and then ?

That’s a good idea, @Mongoose . Thank you for sharing. Why don’t you host a meet-up and show off the results?

By the way, your post is getting moved out Idea Exchange with a Meet-ups label to make it more relevant. Idea Exchange is used for sharing ideas related to the general processes, not specific meet-up concepts.

Thanks for mentioning @ErmesT - it would be great to have @Mongoose run a walk. Details will be posted soon about the launch for 2019.

As a member of a global youth movement as one of the adults who helps things move along I often run workshops for kids aged 10 and up. There are plenty of young people interested in photography. One local boy that I taught is now a professional photographer and doing very well for himself.

Some of the issue preventing youth taking up the craft is from adults. I was once chastised by an adult for letting a 15 year old have my professional camera for the day to take photos of our activity. I trusted her completely and had no issue with her using my camera. This adult soon left the movement as it really wasn’t the place for someone with that attitude.

Good on you for passing on the craft to young people. I can give you a workshop presentation that I use if you would like if you wanted to run your own workshops.

Regards Paul
