Are you experiencing a Panic attack? Relax, Ewaade is here.
I am usually not one to ‘jump on trends’, because I believe that; if there are so many people doing something already, I might as well sit back and listen to them or watch them.
However, when it is something as egregious as a Pandemic, I prefer to stay calm in order to retain my balance and maintain my mental health, while I work towards providing palliative measures to the most vulnerable; the Children and the Poor.
Before I begin my post, I want to thank you all (and that includes You and You ) for; your love and warm welcome since I joined Connect, I really do appreciate your kind and loving gestures.

RESISTING PANIC ATTACK AT THE ONSET OF THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC
When the news of the Coronavirus Pandemic began to make its round, the first thing I did was to turn off my Television, Radio and all Social Media networks that will give news of this. Strange, right? I did this to spare myself the panic attack that may result from the gruesome death tolls and statistics of infected people around the world.
COVID-19 IN NIGERIA
By the time we will have our first case in Nigeria, many countries of the world especially in ‘colder climes’ had already been hit! As the numbers increased, the President called for a ‘lockdown’ which took effect on the 30th of March, 2020 and persists till this moment.
When this happened, I realized that; although, I had made conscious efforts to ‘drown out’ news of the COVID-19 and its widespread infection, it had finally found its way to my town.
PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES AND/OR PALLIATIVES
As expected, information quickly circulated through the Centre for Disease Control and through other channels. I think; all 'my people’ could make out of all of the information that was being circulated was; ‘protect your hands’, ‘protect your nose’, ‘sanitize’.
More than a rampage, there was a craze for gloves, nose masks and sanitizers; more than a determination to source for food or to boost immunity, there was a stronger determination to ‘stay safe and stay alive’.
While everyone rushed to get these items, I remained unbothered, maybe in part due to my knowledge of Microbiology; in which I hold a first degree or due to a strong resolve to stay calm.
Orders came rolling in for ‘Gloves and sanitizers’ at my store which we fulfilled right before the ‘lockdown’.
Those close to me wondered what was wrong with me and why I was being ‘careless’ and not taking precautionary measures.
Why was (am) I this calm?
According to the World Health Organization (W.H.O.);
"The virus that causes COVID-19 is mainly transmitted through droplets generated when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or speaks. These droplets are too heavy to hang in the air. They quickly fall on floors or surfaces. You can be infected by breathing in the virus if you are within 1 metre of a person who has COVID-19, or by touching a contaminated surface and then touching your eyes, nose or mouth before washing your hands.
From this, the facts to note are;
- Coronavirus disease is an airborne disease
- Infection may occur if I am within a one meter radius of an Infected person or I inhale droplets or aerosols generated from this virus.
From this, I can deduce that;
- I am home, I do not have any interaction with an infected person, why should I drive myself up against the wall?
- I can relate to the precautionary measures listed already because; during my first degree, I did my Internship at a Medical laboratory and in the Quality Assurance Department of a ‘convenience foods factory’ where all raw materials and samples of finished products had to go through Physical, Chemical and Microbial examinations in batches. My dear!!! During this period, I became painstakingly aware of my surroundings. Owing to this knowledge and my awareness of the ‘teeming microbial population’ in our world, I take precautionary measures regarding personal hygiene at all times.
COVID-19 AT MY DOORSTEP
However, a sharp turn of events which will shake the very source of my confidence and rustle my calm disposition occurred.
My Elder sister, who is a Medical Doctor and who works in the Pediatrics section of one of the Government-owned hospitals in Lagos, Nigeria became exposed to COVID-19 through a Maternity Patient who suddenly died following child delivery. Upon further testing, it was at this point it was discovered that she died as a result of the COVID-19 infection.
Immediately; all the Doctors, Nursing officers and every other person who had contact with the woman were immediately quarantined and tested. All the members of Staff who exhibited no symptoms following the COVID-19 testing were immediately discharged from the premises and given palliatives.
Where do you think she returned to? Her matrimonial home? You guessed wrongly! She came directly to the Family home where my Parents live.
As I stared at my sister, I got to ‘experience’ firsthand what I had willfully ‘ignored’ as COVID-19 ravaged the Globe on every front! Constantly, she had a ‘Respirator mask’ on and tried her possible best to avoid contact. Her ebullience disappeared, as her anxiety gave way to fear.
She had a certain fear that was palpable through her brilliant eyes, even though she had no symptom and manifested no sign. Desperately, I felt for her, as we anticipated anxiously the result of her tests.
Who do you think was her Nurse at this time? My Mother! Bravely, she stood beside her and helped with infused-steam inhalation and administration of other palliatives. My father; with his foreknowledge of traditional Medicine, swung into action and quickly prepared a potent herbal concoction for her and every one in the Family home.
About a week later, we received with joy the results! She tested Negative! Ah! Her joy went through the roof. In fact, we held a feast to celebrate. We were very delighted!
Everyone kept wondering; “what if she tested positive?” None of us would have been spared from this ordeal as the Government officials would have come to marshal us to theCoronavirus Isolation centre at Yaba, Lagos, Nigeria.
Imagine this happened , I would have had no time to be on Connect or to ‘mix’ with all the amazing people here or to share my stories or to learn about Photography and other things I can attempt now.
This is my first post (all platforms inclusive) about the COVID-19 since the onset of the Pandemic. I have chosen to do it here because Connect is very special to me, so special that; I hope, One day, some time in the nearest future, ‘Connect can take its place amongst the most brilliant of Diamonds’.
We pray a speedy recovery on those correctly infected. We pray strength, grace and peace for the health workers who are at the front-line of these attacks and we pray for a swift recovery to us and to our economy at the end of this Pandemic.
Smile, Stay calm.
