NYC Broadway Theater Accessible Meetup

So we did our meetup yesterday in the heart of Midtown Manhattan with our stated goal of doing a Broadway Theater crawl to identify which theaters are fully accessible. The team was myself and my newfound wingman @EvanMcNeeley And vice versa. We started off with coffee from Starbucks and some super muffins from Whole Foods. As an aside, it was brick yesterday and I guess this is why we had no shows but out we went. If you’re going to do any kind of event in NYC, early Sunday morning is the recommended time. There’s very little vehicular and pedestrian traffic. We stopped at two theaters on 42nd street.

Here’s some photos:

We passed by an AMC movie theater and a Regal movie theater and I went inside with Evan and to my pleasant surprise, the movie theaters accessibility game was on point. They had multiple elevators and they let us take photos of the elevators and escalators.

Here’s some photos of the movie theaters.

These are a few photos, both smartphone and 360 photos. Evan was working very hard and he took some amazing photos and videos and he’s editing them right now and he’ll be posting the photos and links to videos as well. I’ll also add some more photos as well in the coming days.

Hi @Dalster56

Thanks for your Recap. Did you evaluate from the outside only or did you also go inside to take photos?

Update:

Sorry, I see now that you managed to photograph indoors also.

Cheers

@MortenCopenhagen we only took photos of the inside of the movie theater lobby since we weren’t paying customers. Since it’s a private location, we asked if we could take photos in the movie theaters only. The Broadway theaters were another story. I don’t take photos of the interior of any privately owned entity, where I’m not a paying customer and the producers of these shows won’t grant you interior access anyway. Any attempt to photograph the interior may get me a negative interaction with NYPD. In short, we went to the box office, asked questions about accessibility :wheelchair: and were pleased with the customer service and engagement. Prior to our meetup, we reached out to the Broadway Theater Association and they were pleased with our efforts. Every Theater we engaged with, who had total accessibility, are receiving a 5 star review because of their accessibility.

Thank you @Mo_TravelleerX ! Truly a good deed @Dalster56 has come up with. I feel honored to have participated and contributed to it! What a great day too (and great muffins, heheh) plus some good exercise!

Thank you @EvanMcNeeley @Mo_TravelleerX @MortenCopenhagen @PrasadVR I look at this as no different from taking photos while doing things such as birdwatching, landscape photography and touristy imaging. I pick a topic and at the same time see if there’s an angle to help some part of mankind or my neighbors to help. It’s energizing, fun and @EvanMcNeeley and I were like 2 old friends talking and running around trying to get perfect shots. We did these Whole Foods banana Walnut muffins and starbucks coffee before we set out.

I have sent links to our photos on Google Maps to the Broadway Theater producer organizations, letting them know that having their theaters 100% access rates 5 stars from us!

In a few days, I’m reaching out to my contacts at the New York Times City Room and make them aware of accessibility efforts on our part. @EvanMcNeeley please add your photos to your maps profile, so that I can share this with the Broadway League and their organizations.

Still think about our great meet-up this day! I had my transplant and am currently recovering (one year until I can be around crowds again) …three years total from July 2024 until I am fully recuperated (a long haul). Hope all is well doing your accessibility project! Maybe a football game at a sports bar one day!
