Nuclear Power Plant Zwentendorf near Vienna

The nuclear power plant Zwentendorf: Austrian contemporary history and a lesson of Austrian politics. Zwentendorf was the only nuclear power plant in the world to be built, but never put into operation due to a plebiscite. Zwentendorf is a place that fascinates.

It is a great place for photographers to photograph in this industrial monument. The tours are unfortunately very sparse but on this website you can see when there are the next dates.

Thanks for sharing your images. Can you tell us about this place? Interesting that it has never operated.

Excellent post @Foto-Fuessi

Unfortunately I have to go further because the situation is complicated.

In Austria, near Vienna, the construction of the nuclear power plant began in 1972. A boiling water reactor was built and the nuclear power plant was completed. In 1978, a referendum took place and 50.47% of Austrians voted against commissioning. Until March 1985, when the “silent liquidation” of the nuclear power plant was decided it costed the state of Austria 1 billion euros. After the nuclear accident in Chernobyl, a federal constitutional law was passed for an non atomic Austria. In addition, Zwentendorf became the turning point of democratic understanding and established the green movement for the preservation of nature in Austria.

Today, the nuclear power plant serves as a training centre and on the roof is a huge photovoltaic system. In addition, the nuclear power plant serves as a backdrop for many feature films and can also be rented as an event location.
