Nostalgia on a Plate – Rediscovering ITO’s Udupi Café

Tucked inside Pratap Bhawan near ITO, Udupi Café has quietly stood the test of time. Serving classic South Indian fare for over 40 years, it’s the kind of place that doesn’t need fancy decor or gimmicks — just good food and loyal regulars.

I first visited the Udupi café in 1984 but kept on going back with my family and friends for its filter coffee, Rava masala dosa, and kokum soda. It was the first place I ever tried any authentic South Indian dish or drink. The sambhar has a powerful flavour profile of hing (asafoetida), which is light on the stomach with various combinations. The Bene special Dosa is crisp, with light podi masala and served with boiled masala aloo, delicious onion and coconut chutney, and sambhar. I ordered medu vada and Kokum soda, my favourite, which was so refreshing and not overly sweet, but sour, which was like an energy and immunity booster drink. I keep coming back to this place for its taste, hospitality, and ever-evolving kolam designs on the walls of this beautiful, cosy eatery. The cost of every dish served here is reasonable. I was accompanied by @Ssiddharth2000 @Gvipin @Hemendu @SonamW @Amitsharma007

Think crisp dosas, soft idlis, hot vadas, and that perfectly brewed filter coffee — all in a simple, no-frills setting that feels like a warm memory. A hidden gem that continues to feed hearts (and office-goers) since the early '80s.

Must-try bites: Rava masala dosa, Bese bhile bhaat, tamarind rice, sambhar rice, kokum soda, and their soul-soothing filter tea. Last but not least, they have sweet paan filled with the sweetness of gulukand, which is a palate cleanser also.

@ShreyaMusings how can I forget this gathering at Udupi. It was here my wish to have South Indian tomato mint rice was fulfilled. And paan after the meal was an excellent idea.
You have mentioned each and everything so nicely :bouquet:
