The last year my life has been changed as my daughter was born, so my contributions as a local guide include mostly nonsmoking places for coffee and food. And believe me, this is not an easy task in Athens, the city where I live. For many years smoking in Greece was at the highest rate of tobacco consumption in the European Union, so in 2009 an anti-smoking law has been passed.
We can enjoy a relatively smoke-free everyday life in our workspace, inside public buildings, and aboard all public transport. It is, however, quite difficult to find non-smoking hangouts as the law is theoretically prohibiting indoor smoking, it is barely enforced and many establishments ignore it. Unfortunately, there is little evidence of the culture changing, but in recent years the situation improves.
Now that my needs have changed and I can’t be tolerant of smoke, I am trying to find places which are smoke-free in theory and in practice. I want to reach the point where there will be so many smoke-free establishments that it won’t be difficult to find one.
