Just now I tried to post a photo from the explore tab and the poi’s update tab and there was no place to add a caption. I tried again with a video, but that didn’t work either.
Has anyone else seen this?

@Rednewt74 I just tried it and able to see a box to add captions through Updates > Add a photo update . Can you post a screenshot of what you’re seeing? Which device are you using?
@iyudhi ,
Thank you for responding. I use an Android phone. I have tried adding from update tab. Here’s screenshots of what happened.
I added one at adiff poi. After adding the picture, under edit there is an option to add a caption, but not the kind that adds points
@Rednewt74 I just checked both Android and iPhone and able to add captions for both. Just want to make sure we’re using the same workflow, did you tap on the ‘Updates’ option directly from the listing itself? After that there should be an option ‘Add a photo update’ and if you tap that, there will be a box ‘Say something about your photos (optional)’
is this what you’re seeing as well? Sorry, I can’t really tell from the screenshots you posted. If we’re using the same flow, can you check if there’s an update for Google Maps app on Play Store? If there’s none, can you confirm which version of Google Maps app you’re using?
So far it is working fine @Rednewt74 and the option to add caption does appear if we go through Explore tab of our profile or update tab from a specific POI.
After clicking ‘Add a post’ from Explore tab or ‘Add a photo update’ from Update tab, a text box with helping text as 'Say something about your photos (optional)’ does appear.
I am also using Android phone and am able to see this.
Try to update Google Map once (if any update is pending) and restart your device. Hopefully that works.
@iyudhi ,
Yes that is the work flow I am using. Previously I added captions via the update tab on a poi and the explore (or latest) tab in the general maps view. I have 29 captions so far. I just checked again and it is still not working. I thought maybe it was because the owner had updates on the poi, so I tried one with no owner updates and no joy.
maps version 11.108.0100 (#1067286342)
@Rednewt74 Same version of Google Maps I’m using. Try clearing cache and storage of the Google Maps app, force stop the app, then restart the app. If it’s still not showing, try uninstall and reinstall the app.
Also for sanity check, can you try a different location and see if you have the same issue?
@iyudhi ,
I have tried 3 or 4 locations. I will stop the app and figure out how to clear the cache and update you.
I have reset the app storage and cache. I have restarted my phone. Going to a poi’s update or using the explore tab, does not show me the caption option.
As I recall as soon as you clicked “add a photo update”, the caption box was the first thing you saw.
You can see from these screen shots, I was on the POI update tab and the update was added. I was awarded 5 points as usual. So I don’t know what’s going on.
@Rednewt74 perhaps A/B testing going on. I did notice something a bit different from your screenshot compared to mine. You have the option to react (Press and hold to react). I don’t have this option yet. Something’s definitely going on in the backend I think.
@iyudhi ,
Yes the react change is pretty recent. I don’t remember if I’ve tried a caption update since it appeared, but I don’t think so.
The Say something-option is available both via Update under the pin and via the Explore tab in my Android app.
Try sharing the Maps links to a place where can not add “Say something” so we can test if it is your app or the area that is different.
Cheers
Morten
Hallo, bei mir funktioniert es einwandfrei. Sobald ich Erkunden auswähle werden mir sofort alle erforderlichen Menüpunkte angezeigt, wie vor zu sehen
Hi @Rednewt74
Thanks for bringing this to our attention. I also checked and experienced the same. It seems some changes are going on. When I open the ‘Add Update’ section, something is supposed to load in place of the ‘Say something…’ field. However, it ends up showing nothing.
This should also have the same reason as the problem @StevenBerlin explained here.
Hello @Rednewt74 ,
Looking at these screenshots here, it seems you are getting some new features like Press and hold to react instead.
So, there could be some changes happening and you are one of the early getters of this new change.
In my android I am still getting the ‘Say something…’ text box. May be we have to wait for couple of days to get to know the exact situation.
I have shared my feedback earlier also for such random roll out. These should be planned and well communicated before and/or in real time rolling out any feature on Google Map. This severly impacts the regular contributors.
@Amiran Can you share a screenshot of when you’re trying to update a place? If you have added photos through updates section before, do you have the option ‘Press and hold to react’ ?
Same with the previous screenshots.
And, no. The emoji reactions still aren’t available on my app.
@Amiran Alright, well there goes that theory.
Have you been able to add captions through the updates option before, or is the issue just recently?
I’ve added several updates before and even checked it when the “Caption” section was added to the points. So, these observations are very recent issues and I think they will be fixed, soon.
@Amiran ,
I’m sorry you are having the same problem, but I am glad it isn’t just me.
I pulled up an explore tab for Copenhagen and still have the the react option but not the add caption box.
I’m sure time will sort it out. I’m only using the caption option if I have a couple of extra videos or photos and want the extra points. Last night I actually had one that I thought should be under update.
