New Zealands Northland Captured My Heart & Lens

Beginning of 2018, I spent a week traveling through Northland, the furthermost northern region of New Zealand. While all tourists rush to famous destinations down south, I took time to explore all those hidden gems in Northland during a week. It’s a mixture of all kinds of landscapes and they’re so vast and seem literally so untouched by humans that sometimes I felt I found one of those rare places on earth where you’re so far away and so close to nature that all that counts is the moment.

Hiking on Urupukapuka Island means walking up and down the hill, while cliffs, incredible views, the sea and forests are always just a step away.

Maitai Bay is beautiful and special, because if you turn around and walk up a 2m hill, you look down into an adjacent and equally stunning bay. Almost no one is here although it's a beautiful summer day.

Spirits Bay was such a unique place, literally at the end of the world. Watching the sunset here was something truly magical.

Famous Cape Reinga and the Pohutukawa tree, from which the Maori believe their dead's souls to leave New Zealand to return to their ancestral home country. This place has such a powerful vibe, not only because two oceans cross directly in front of this.

When you drive through forests and mountains over a hill, and the next thing you see are gigantic sand dunes and the sea reaching far into the land, you realize New Zealand is special.

Lake Taharoa was a recommendation of our Kiwi guest family and it was such a stunning place. The shallow waters were almost transparent until further out, where they suddenly dropped into the deep and a mesmerizing dark blue.

Bethells Beach captivated me with its chocolate brown sand and a small river flowing down to the beach, reflecting the stunning blue sky of New Zealand.

The Mermaid Pools were a special trip - the way up and down an incredibly steep hill was both hilarious and a bit dangerous, but snorkeling in these breathtaking natural pools fed by waves was a once in a lifetime experience.
