New places review policy needs to be strengthened

Often, during editing of places around me, i have reported some “places”, which actually are names of people & not actual places. E.g., i am standing on the road & add my name to that place, even though it may be a barren road in the middle of no-where.

And, inspite of a place showing in the maps, some people are deliberately adding the same place twice by standing or marking its location slightly away by a few metres.

Maybe, just for publicity, fun or to meet the “Add new places” target, but this is serious… am surprised how frequent this has become.

Hi @goelmyself ,

Thanks for sharing your concerns with us! : ]

We understand your determination, as for the sake of the idea, would you mind sharing a bit more of your thoughts and perhaps suggestions as well?

Hi @sonnyNg ,

thanks for writing back, as my feedback on Google maps from my phone never got a response… I have often found people add a new place with their name, even if they are standing by the roadside & there’s actually nothing there…I couldnt find a snapshot for this since i had reported the ones i was aware of…

Or, they add a new place even if they know there’s already another one here… pls refer below mentioned snaps… In the 1st snap, someone added a duplicate of existing business, which seems deliberate, unless two different persons added it at the exact same time …

In the 2nd, a taxi service is mentioned even though this whole area is my office factory, and no other business is here.

In the 3rd snap, a premier hospital of North India, PGI Chandigarh, where people have added it by different names & at slightly different locations… The whole red circled area is one institute only known by different names as mentioned in the caption.

Some of the additions must be deliberate, some may be done out of ignorance or stupidity…

My recommendation is that some checks need to be there to avoid these… or maybe you guys can delegate some editing options to trusted local guides to correct these issues , since am sure, even Google will find it difficult to correct everything on its own…

For the 3rd snap, i guess you add an option of marking a whole campus with one name e.g, PGIMER, Chandigarh…

All these snapshots are taken right now & from my city Chandigarh…

My point being, Google maps should show only actual places rather than 15 listings against 6 places… This is our common intent. Sorry cant think of any other suggestion right now…

I reported a LG to another moderator on wednesday as he was spamming a whole lot of fake reviews, which was deliberate. He was posting his jeep’s snaps against restaurant reviews and the like…

Hi @sonnyNg ,

Fond some more snapshots worth sharing with you…

First pic: Someone has added the “Ramp” of UILS as a separate place within UILS, i guess, just to meet his target of adding new places…

2nd, Sanjay walia- its the name of a person, but someone (probably Sanjay Walia himself) has added it as a grocery store, even though physically there’s no grocery store here…

I have already reported both these places a short while ago…

Sorry i know i said this before, but people are adding even ramps & gates & rooms inside a building/place as a separate place…

Unfortunately, am as clueless as to how to stop this spam!

Thanks.

Hi @goelmyself ,

Thanks for sharing such detailed explanations.

For the moment, would you mind clarifying which one location of the first example (Cheema Boilers Limited) is the real building?

Also, if you could send us the link to the location of ULIS, altogether with the Ramp of ULIS?

Just to be sure, besides from the inquiries above, if you could possibly send us all the links to the locations you have reported. : ]

I have also relocated your post to How-tos, as it would be more convenient for further investigation.

Hi @sonnyNg , since its a weekend I can answer your queries by Tuesday… Since its much easier and faster for me to draft on laptop than in phone…

And in case u can share your screen I can explain your queries first hand…

My laptop is company controlled, so don’t know if I can share mine…

Thanks,

Hi @sonnyNg , I will get back to you by Tuesday since its much easier for me to draft a response on laptop… And somehow any replies I send through phone always get a delivery failure…

If you could grant your screen control to me, it would be much easier… And hardly a 2-3 minutes job…

(My lappy is company controlled, so I cannot dare ask our administrator to allow me to share my screen with you for unofficial work, sorry : -P

Thx, cs goel

Hi @goelmyself ,

Thanks for sharing further details with us!

In case you could retrace and find the Google Maps links to the locations that you have found with irregular information, do feel free to share with us at your convenience. : ]

Hi @sonnyNg ,

Re-pasting the reply i sent yesterday since its not displaying here on this post. (i had replied to you thru gmail…)

For the first snap, the place highlighted in green is actual location. It’s very close to my office.

Cheema boilers location : https://www.google.com/maps/@30.7144614,76.6912509,19.21z

Spam place (Sanjay Walia) location : https://www.google.com/maps/@30.7609725,76.7767849,21z

Its located in Sector 12, Chandigarh, india

Ramp UILS location : https://www.google.com/maps/@30.7664439,76.7672448,20.49z

Hope this helps… If not, you may setup a Goto meeting (if possible) for around 10pm Indian standard time any day. I can then mark the places to you…

And are our conversations public?? Just curious…

Thanks,

Cs goel
