Hi, I discovered something new on the Maps app, if you are reading the reviews of some POI you can tap on the keywords, those that are mentioned across multiple reviews, by doing so the filter will show you only those reviews containing the keyword, nothing new, right? Well here is where it gets interesting, some keywords can show images as well.
I’d like to think that this is in part thanks to Crowdsource (another Google program that helps to improve AI used in Google products through contributions) . If you want to join, you can download the app with this link and start contributing with easy tasks.
Here’s an example of a park with a basketball court, this feature is only available on the app, not on browser version.
Here are more examples of the keywords flag, butterfly, DJ and dragon, as I said before not all keywords show results:
I find this feature pretty useful it can improve with captions or alt text though, maybe in the future it will recognize more objects and obviously it depends on the amount of uploaded photos to the POI.
I have only seen this feature on Android. Is it available on iOS too?

I’m curious in which way you see #googlecrowdsource being involved with this.

Hi @KattyGeltmeyer
Crowdsource has tasks based on identifying objects in images, all these data is used to improve products like Google Lookout, and maybe it is also used in this feature

Hi @KattyGeltmeyer
I’m quite sure that Google is using Crowdsource to train AIs that are used across all their products. Why shouldn’t they?
Cheers

@Mortencopenhagen: I’m also quite sure crowdsource is meant for training ai-models related to several products and services. But as I’m not fully involved into labeling images etc. I wonder which specific subjects are related to maps related issues. In the case of food related subjects I’m quite sure the pictures people are providing on maps by adding pictures of dishes etc. are used within crowdsource for training food related models and solving food related tasks within crowdsource will also train these food related models. It’s an exchange of info between what users on maps are sharing and what crowdsource users are doing. But In the case of what was described above by @LaloPadilla I was not quite sure. I mean: I can’t tell which specific crowdsource ssubjects are involved for training the models that are generating this update described above by @LaloPadilla . In the case of smart camera, this feels as if it’s directly training the models that will help to improve lookout by google or google lens.

@KattyGeltmeyer Basically all image related tasks (Image label verification, Food compare, image caption, smart camera, etc.) are used to improve AI models, possibly used in this feature, I said possibly because I can’t garantee that haha, but as @MortenCopenhagen said , Why wouldn’t they use it on this feature?
