There has been a recent bug or would you say glitch regarding loss of points and in some cases contributions going down for some local guides. We are sorry for the loss and we hope this issue will be rectified soonest. For all who are experiencing this and have reported, the team are investigating it. We would encourage others who have noticed this to please report here on this thread,giving enough accurate information and evidence to show the loss or glitch.
That said,besides other causes,one possible cause of loss of points for local guides is the settings in the**maps historyfound here?**To access that page,check or change the settings, Auto- Delete(off)
Please go to your Google maps app
Click on your profile photo
A drop down list click settings.
Another drop down list please click on maps history
It brings you to page of maps activity. As seen below. Please make sure it’s (Off) if it was (On)
My reason for adding that is please check and make sure that’s not the cause for your loss of points before reporting here. The settings is alsofound on a link here?

Hello. This must have been asked before but I don’t see it in the search.
I am a level 8 Guide with 43,559 points. I have been losing points and contributions over the past few weeks. I lost 81 points and 79 contributions just today and about 3,000 over the past month.
The number of photos I have on Google Maps has not decreased so it’s not the photos. It must be the survey questions that are disappearing.
Does anyone know why contributions and points are removed and is there a way to get them back?
I’m going to stop contributing if my points only go down.
It seems the automatic clearing the Maps data is on for your account so the questions about places you’ve visited are clearing after a certain period.
And also, in my opinion, we as Local Guides and volunteer users contribute not for points so, while it is true that some situations may disappoint us, this is not true to say “I stop contributing”. We contribute constantly to help the society and helping the society never should be stopped.
Thanks for your reply . This issue came up in my research on why I am losing points and I did check the setting before I posted. I don’t know where you are looking, but my Auto Delete is set to Off.
I had 174 points drop overnight. Same problem here and auto-delete is set to off.
I’ve now started a spreadsheet with my numbers to see if I can work out why Google is silently doing things in the background. If they’re going to give us a score, maybe they should be more transparent about why that score drops?
Hi - I had around 1200 contributions and 3000 points. This morning I have 438 contributions and 2111 points. Issues appears to be mainly around the “answers”. I answered around 700 questions but my account only shows 248 today… why are my contributions dropping daily?? New to this forum so apologies if this is in the wrong place!
My images and reviews on Google have remained the same or gone up as I contribute. The only thing that could be losing points are the survey questions and those can’t violate content policy because they are generated by Google.

Now regarding your issue of losing points,please kindly confirm that your auto-delete is set to OFF in your maps activity-History-saving to web and app activitiy settings found here
The points in my account dropped by almost 5000 in the last month, the reduction is still happening - checked that web and app activity delete setting is “OFF”.
Any suggestions on how to stop the reductions and if the lost points can be reinstated.
