New in Google Maps - New Views (of our Photos)

From time to time Google Maps releases some small updates, which even if it does not add particular features certainly please many.

This is the case with this small change, which highlights the views obtained by our photos in the last seven days

If you haven’t seen it yet, try searching below in the “contribute” section of the Google Maps App.

A small change, but one that can help us understand the performance of our photos. Someone may consider it useless, but if used correctly in my opinion it can be very useful, because it allows us to improve our contributions, and to better understand the relationship between the images we upload in Maps and the views we receive.

Therefore, with a view to improving our contributions, I can only say “welcome” to this small detail.

Do you also agree or do you think they should have made a different change?

What changes do you think could help us improve?

For example, I think it would be interesting to compare my views of the images of a place and the images with the most views of the same place, because this would help me choose which photo to upload.

Do you agree with me?

When can we have a bigger update in which Google improves its AI to less hide innocent reviews?

Compared to that barely any impacted local guides cares about what other “update” Google makes.

You beat me to share this tiny improvement, @ErmesT .

Looking at your screenshot and in my app it seems that the period covered is for sure the past 7 days.

I like it. No wonder.

I’m not sure how this can help us improve. The number reflects not only views of recently uploaded images, but views of all the images we have uploaded since we uploaded our first image. But for sure it can bring attention to monitor our photoviews.

There is a spelling bug in the Danish version of this. On my screen it says “5.1 mio. ny”. Since the number is not 1 the plural form of new should be used like in “5.1 mio. nye” (an “e” is missing at the end).

Maybe @DeniGu would kindly escalate this misspelling to the relevant team?

Cheers and thanks for sharing this.

Thanks for responding to my post and letting us know you dont care, @ivanos

Well, I do care about that, even if I am involved with the issue about reviews too, and much more than you. Fortunately Connect Moderators do not have any special protection, so I can talk about this experience due to personal knowledge.

I am indignant about the reviews situation, but unlike you my indignation goes towards the silence of many Local Guides towards the real problem, the one that forces not only Google, but all those who provide online reviews, to take drastic measures, and to develop AI to stop this shameful situation. I’ve seen a few say "I reported fake reviews, reviews bought by someone to improve their rating, thus deceiving users like you and me who trust those reviews, or to harm a competitor company. I have personally reported these situations in the appropriate places, and I hope these businesses are literally deleted from Maps. But here in connect I have also read complaints from Local Guides that they ended up not getting paid to write fake reviews (a scam within a scam).

I’m closing this conversation here (it’s a bit off topic regarding the title of this post), but I’ll be happy to pick it up again when I read a post where someone addresses the issue from this point of view, even if I’m afraid that post will have to be written by me.

I wish you a wonderful day

Thanks for sharing @ErmesT . if I saw the last 5 months in my profile as a beta tester. Aug to Oct it’s just an orange dot from November shown in 2 colors Orange and green.

@ErmesT

Still, the upgrade you mentioned here is what most impacted Local Guides don’t care about much, compared to the more fundamental and severe issues right there. Please note here is the “compared to”, meaning things are considered in relative terms not in absolute terms. Hope you have already caught that words and meaning in my original reply (afraid not).

As to the point you are indignant and not so much indignant about regarding to the situation here, I’ve already expressed my response to you in a long post before which you have been failing to address. So I won’t spend more time repeating here.

Sure you can close the conversation anytime you want.

Hi @MortenCopenhagen ,

Appreciate you flagging this! The best place to report similar errors and make suggestions for improvement would be the in-app feedback section. I’ll also share this internally.

Thank you!

@DeniGu

I tried the in-app send feedback, and I noticed the feature has been greatly improved since the last time I used it. I was even able to draw on the automatic screenshot. Not bad.

By the way, my views for the past week jumped overnight to 7.4 million new views which is better in line with my private calculations.

Cheers

I see it as a welcome update, @ErmesT . It definitely serves as an additional nudge to get back excited about posting photos, as the original chart did (The Necklace Challenge). It would be great if a chart like this was connected to each image.

@LightRich just made a post on Monitoring our photo views and points out some of the additional details that we have access to on the Top 100 Local Guides website. I’ve been using the ‘Star Track’ feature there to monitor different photos I’ve taken while experimenting with @MortenCopenhagen 's advice from his Storefront Photography Series since the system allows you to choose any 9 photos aside from the “Star.”

I’m still adamant that these functions should be baked into maps since the data is already being tracked. Thank you for pointing out the new update!
