Do you sometimes wonder what place or experience you should try next? That’s where the Explore tab on Google Maps can provide inspiration for your next great adventure. Simply pan the map to the area you want to go, pull up the Explore tab, and explore experiences that locals and visitors are sharing in the area.
Now, you can immerse yourself in the local vibe even more with the addition of videos in the feed.
Hi @KarolinaPysz Thanks for sharing. This is a great feature. It will be very helpful to guides who are looking for something different in different countries and locations.
I’m not so sure I’m happy with this addition: the visual based content seems to be becoming even more important. If the video’s don’t get kind of caption or audio description, they will be inaccessible for people who can’t see the visual content. Images and video’s already deliver more points than good written reviews, and if the visual content takes over the textual content, … people with visual impairments will encounter more difficulties and will be excluded from needed info.
@KarolinaPysz This is exciting, as there is a great future potential for this feature on Maps. I do wish Google had encouraged Local Guides to share engaging and quality content, before they started forcefully featuring videos at the #2 position of a POI.
Have you taken a moment to scroll through and watch the videos that pop up? If that was your business, would you want a grainy video of dirty plates to be the 2nd thing a Maps user sees? How about a 5 sec video of lasagna, with a hand in front of the lens for over 2 seconds? Happy birthday videos seem to be quite popular, as well. I don’t imagine those videos are drawing in more patrons than the photo previously located at the #2 position?
If I may make a very simple and reasonable suggestion: A Maps “Video Challenge” would be a fantastic way to have LGs share quality content that will help the end user AND the business owner! So many of us enjoy sharing quality content already - but we all would love earning points and a Connect badge, for sharing practical and responsible videos to Maps POIs.
I believe you’d see a lot of engagement in such a challenge and the ENTIRE Maps community would greatly benefit.
We all know that this is the future of maps and it’s here right now, @KarolinaPysz ,
Question will Google in the future separate video posts from photo? For those of us that want to track our progress and productivity of our video posts, It’s very hard to even find where our video posts are.
I would like to see beside the review views and photo views, Could we have a separate list or category for video posts?
I also agree with @Mikeinthefalls says about too many bad videos being featured, Hopefully this will change.
I know that when What’s new in my area started there was way too many selfies and children’s shots, It definitely improved.
