Hi colleges,
2 days ago Google announced that newer pixel phones will be getting new camera features.
Much to my surprise I was able to upgrade my Pixel 7a phone today. It normally takes months before new versions reach us here in Denmark. It took an hour plus to download and install. So now it runs Android 14.
Then when I opened my camera, a new version was proposed. I downloaded it.
Here are my initial observations:
Still photos got a new mode for long exposures. This is different from night photos.
You can make the foreground or background blurry. Here is a first test showing my thumbs-up while moving both the phone and my hand.
Here is a screenshot from the camera showing the use of the long exposure:
At the bottom video and stills now have each their bottom tab. I like that. Before video was at the same level as the different still photo modes.

Under videos there is now a super stabilizer for use when panning. It looks impressive:
There should also be some new features to quickly switch between your favorite camera settings.
I will add more info should I discover more new features.

@MortenCopenhagen the UI has changed for the better I think. It’s better now to have a separate toggle for photo vs video and then in each mode, it’s just a carousel to access all the different sub-modes.
One thing that I really like and appreciate is that it also remembers the last chosen sub-mode. For example, I like doing my videos in Pan. When I switch from camera to video, it immediately starts in the Pan sub-mode. Previously, I have to always activate the Pan to get good stabilised videos.

Although Turkey is a very big market and a young country, there is no Google Pixel sales. Therefore, I cannot comment much, but I am sure you are making the most of it @MortenCopenhagen

Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I checked and Android 14 was available. Camera upgrade will be fun to explore. I have turned on 10 bit hdr, and will be curious to see the difference. I also like the idea of Macro video.

Thanks for the run-down and the real world examples @MortenCopenhagen . I’ve been tapping my ‘Check for Updates’ button since they said v14 was available with no luck.
I was pretty excited about some of the features in the Pixel 8 Pro so I’ve submitted my pre-order. We’ll see what shows up first; my update or my new phone.

I thought I’d share this photo that I took using the long exposure setting. It really captured the view and the exposure is amazing. I have not edited the photo.
