Need to Reopen Google Maps’ Add Event Feature to Reduce Map Clutter

Until 2018, Google Maps had a feature that allowed users to create temporary event locations with detailed information.
This feature was particularly useful for festivals, fairs, concerts, and public events that took place in temporary locations such as open fields, parks, and stadiums.
However, contributors have resorted to creating permanent map locations for such events after its removal, leading to unnecessary clutter and misinformation.

In Bangladesh, cultural festivals and events are frequently organized in public spaces like Suhrawardy Udyan, which hosts the Amar Ekushey Book Fair every year for a month in February 1-28,

along with other fairs, Bengali New Year celebrations, Victory Day events, and political gatherings. Each year, new location pins are created for these recurring events, and after their completion, these locations become irrelevant, contributing to map pollution. Thousands of reviews and photos are uploaded to these temporary locations, rendering them useless once the event ends.

If Google Maps reinstates the Add Event feature, contributors can create temporary event listings without generating excessive and redundant locations. This would ensure a cleaner, more efficient map experience while still allowing people to share event-related content. The restoration of this feature would significantly reduce the accumulation of unnecessary map locations, improving overall accuracy and usability.

Reactivating the Add Event feature is crucial for maintaining the integrity of Google Maps while supporting community-driven contributions in an organized manner.

I have written on another topic, although I can’t write it neatly, I hope you will understand what I mean @DeniGu. If you think it is important after reading it, please forward it to the appropriate team.

Your initiative to bring back the temporary location feature on Google Maps is truly commendable! It would definitely help keep the map cleaner and more relevant, especially during festivals and large events. I support this idea, as it will prevent unnecessary duplicate locations and clutter. Hopefully, Google Maps will consider reinstating this feature. Keep up the great work, and I encourage everyone to share their thoughts and suggestions! :rocket::bulb:

Thank you for highlighting this very important and timely issue.
In the current context, Google should include temporary location/ “Add Event” system to Maps.

Oh my, I didn’t know this feature existed on Maps. It’s a shame that it was discontinued. What was the reason for this discontinuation?

It’s really confusing to deal with such locations. In one hand, I know these are temporary locations and will no longer exist for next one year, but on the other hand these locations contain valuable insights, reviews and photos which represent the vibes of those events. So, reintroducing this event feature will be a great addition to the Maps.

That’s really a necessary feature as most of the fest happening her are also creating these permenent profile which shouldn’t be there in the first place. If that events feature is brought back it will do a lot of good things.

I totally resonate with @MahabubMunna. This is a wonderful idea! Adding events to Maps was a helpful feature without making the platform too cluttered. There are so many events happening around us—some are seasonal, some are one-time, and some are annual. However, not all of them are added to Maps because most of these are hosted by non-government organizations.

If Local Guides had the option to create or add events to Maps, it would make the platform even more organized. To avoid duplicate entries, Maps could control this feature by granting access only to a certain level of Local Guides. Additionally, once an event is added, other Local Guides could be encouraged to merge their entries with the existing one.

Hi @MahabubMunna,

This is really great feedback to share with the team via the Maps feedback option and/or the Maps community forum. These channels are monitored, and suggestions coming from them reach the responsible teams directly. Thank you!

Thank you for your comment @DeniGu , I have been contributing to that forum for more than 8 years. From some personal bitter experiences,
I posted directly on Connect in the belief that if the local guide team reviews and thinks it is important, they should forward it directly to the Google Maps technical team it’s more better .

One problem with the map support forum is that some experts maybe they are European / American have less idea about regional events or mapping categories and geo problems also never try to understand that.
If they give their opinion from their perspective, most of the time the proposals are rejected at the initial stage due to various problems in Asia.

Let me explain to you through an example. Suppose you and I are siblings. Now if I ask my father for money directly, my mother may object to giving it to me. But if you ask your father for money, my father may not be able to deny your request.
i thinks this problem share as like that

Hi @MahabubMunna,

Please don’t get me wrong. We continue to welcome meaningful feedback on Connect and we do share it internally.

I shared the two channels above as they’re more appropriate when it comes to Maps-specific feedback. The feedback option in Maps, in particular, redirects all suggestions to the team(s) that would be most suitable to take action. That’s why we always encourage Local Guides to share their thoughts there as well.

I agree with you @MahabubMunna that’s why I left as Product Specialist Contributor. (I think this is due to lack of geography and culture knowledge.
