Need help finding the exit? Google Maps will help you!

Another new feature is making Google Maps better.

Have you ever been lost in a department store or a convoluted train station? I have!

This morning I read this article and thought this could be some small test that might never be rolled out to reach me. But I was wrong or just lucky to own a Pixel phone.

I looked up this store on Google Maps and the exits were clearly shown on my Pixel 7a. The new intuitive icon depicts a door with a horizontal arrow. The store has 2 entrances/exits as seen in my screenshot, and the building outline turned red to indicate this is a special place.

I tried to edit the location of the pin to possibly also edit the location of the exit doors. Nope - Local Guides are not trusted to move these new icons on the map. I speculate that this is reserved for business owners to move.

All the best

This is a nice and useful update, I think Local Guides members should be given access to do this as they are experts in Google mapping. @MortenCopenhagen

It’s even smarter!

@JanVanHaver discovered this building.

It has several levels and entrances.

When zoomed out the new entrance icons get smaller as seen here:

When you click on the different businesses in the building the relevant entrance will be shown with the bigger entrance icon.

How cool is that?

Make sure to use your mobile. This will not show on the desktop.

@MortenCopenhagen ich bin am Smartphone.

Mit PC Anzeige wäre es unterwegs ja auch nicht hilfreich :grinning:

Aber im Ernst, die ganzen Google Maps anzeigen sind hier uralt und nicht aktuell.

So viele Fehler

My perspective: Errors are wonderful challenges to be fixed - not a problem!

@MortenCopenhagen and @Annaelisa :

Several months ago I noticed (at the desktop) for the shopping center Minto in Mönchengladbach, when zooming in closely enough, you may select a specific floor. Not sure, the exits were already marked at that time, but they are there now. However, I do not know, if navigation works inside that building to find the exit, if you got lost.

I did read - don’t remember where - all this must be specified by the owner of the building. If we, the local guides place a new business inside the center, we can specify the floor, if I remember correctly.

Hi @WilfriedB

Those are called indoor maps. Learn more here: https://www.google.com/maps/about/partners/indoormaps/

I contemplated including a reference to indoor maps but decided not to as this new feature with exit doors works also where there is no indoor map.

For navigation indoors the owner will need to install bluetooth transmitters at strategic locations as the GPS signals are too weak inside buildings. This is done already in some airports etc.

Für Deutschland ist es im Moment vermutich nur in Berlin - sind noch immer Tests meiner Meinung nach.

@MortenCopenhagen Great you have the first hand experience of it. I just read the news it’s rolled out to very few people specially pixel one guys. This is the definitely going to be genuinely liked by the people. Can’t wait to see my hands on this :+1:t2:

Thanks @Yotaroh

That particular station is a nightmare to navigate. I never managed to find my desired exit without hick-ups!

Thanks for reporting.
