At the recent Namaste India 2026 Local Guides event, I had the incredible opportunity to host a panel discussion alongside my team @kalgichhaya , @Sparetimer866 @Himanikapoor . We focused on a topic deeply important to our community: Women’s Safety and Child-Friendly Places.
Our primary goal for the session was to understand how we, as Local Guides, can make safety, accessibility, and family-friendly facilities easier to discover on Google Maps. The community shared amazing insights on how we can contribute more meaningfully.
What We Discussed
-
Navigating new areas: How women can identify safer places and facilities while traveling.
-
Parental resources: How parents can spot child-friendly locations and facilities without the guesswork.
-
Our role as Guides: The impact Local Guides have when adding location-specific safety details.
-
Data visibility: Making safety-related information easier for everyday users to find and understand.
-
Responsible mapping: Encouraging our community to contribute accurate, responsible information.
Key Feature Ideas from the Community (cc: @Latika)
Out of our brainstorming, the panel developed a few concrete product suggestions for Google Maps to better highlight this data:
1. A Dedicated Tab
The community strongly suggested adding a “Women’s Safety & Child-Friendly Places” tab directly within place listings to centralize this critical data:
Women’s Safety Features
Child-Friendly Amenities
Well-lit or safer area indicators
Baby-care and changing facilities
Women-friendly amenities
Designated play areas
Emergency and support facilities
Family-friendly environments
Verified safety facilities
Stroller accessibility information
2. A Visual Safety Badge
We also proposed introducing a dedicated visual icon or badge on the map or place listing whenever Local Guides contribute relevant safety or child-friendly information.
-
For Users: It allows people to spot useful safety info instantly without digging through a full listing.
-
For Local Guides: A badge would incentivize more guides to actively seek out and map these vital categories.
The Expected Impact
Implementing these ideas would turn individual contributions into highly visible, structured safety data. It would make Google Maps significantly more inclusive for solo female travelers, parents, families exploring unfamiliar cities, and senior citizens.
Thank you to everyone who joined the session and shared their perspectives! I would love to see these community-driven ideas explored further to make Google Maps a safer, more family-friendly platform for everyone.
