The existence of Nainital depends on the Naini lake which was discovered by an Englishman named Baron during his trekking expedition in the Himalayan mountain range in 1839. He was so impressed by the natural beauty of this lake and its surrounding that he decided to establish a colony on its banks.
The lake is surrounded by many mountains like Naina Peak, Tiffin Top and snow-capped peaks on the north side i.e. towards the ropeway. Coniferous forest trees further enhance the beauty of these mountain ranges. The water catchment area of this lake is provided by natural streams, waterfalls etc. which bring rain water directly into it from the slopes of the mountains.
This is a natural freshwater lake whose water is alkaline. Gradually, as the population increased, human excreta also started reaching this lake through drains and sewers, due to which there was an excess of nutrients, due to which aquatic life came under threat and silt is also continuously increasing at the bottom. As the settlement is increasing then landslides chances are increasing. Now adequate measures are being taken for the conservation of this magnificent lake.
This lake is the lifeline of Nainital and is a famous landmark all over the world. During holidays, various entertainment programs are organized in the field on one of its banks in the sunshine, which also includes sports competitions. The maximum temperature here reaches 25 degrees Celsius. Therefore, warm clothes are necessary in every season. Paddle boats are available on rent for boating and life saving jackets. High speed motor boats are also available. In fact, Nainital tourism is meaningless without enjoying boating in Naini Lake. Along the length, there is Mall Road on the bank where there is hustle and bustle all the time. On one side there is Naina Devi temple, a mosque, Mallital and Tallital areas where there are all kinds of restaurants, hotels, retail stores etc.
