The crater was created by a meteorite impact millions of years ago. You name is because in Spanish colonial times there were rich gold mines in Nayarit. Actualy, the lake ‘Santa María del Oro’ lake is a wetland with plenty of reeds on the banks, which, together with the pine and oak forests of the surrounding hills, provide beautiful scenary. Its iridescent waters look different tones like green, blue and turquoise. It is an ideal place to enjoy outdoor activities such as kayaking, boating and walking in the surrounding area. From its diverse gastronomy you can taste the speciality, the fried mojarra.
