Hippopotamus
The hippopotamus (Hippo) (scientific name: Hippopotamus amphibius) is a big ungulate animal. It is semi-aquatic and inhabitant of Saharan - Africa. It belongs to the Hippopotamidae and its genus is Hippopotamus.
The name Hippopotamus is derived from a Greek word that means the River horse. The Hippopotamus mostly prefers banks of rivers and lakes to relax. Hippopotamus has short legs and a short tail. They are huge in size, an adult male has an average length of 11 feet and weighs approximately 3000 kg. Females are smaller than males, an adult female weighs approximately 2200 kg. Their skin is as thick as 2 inches and it is in greyish brown colour.
The Hippos are considered vulnerable according to the Red List of IUCN. They are hunted for their meat and their population drastically decreased in recent years.
As an LG Photographer, I have spotted Hippo in Nandankanan Zoo Here, Bannerghatta Zoological Park Here & Mysore Zoo Here
