My Volunteer Experience at the National Institute of Gastroenterology and Hepatology
The National Institute of Gastroenterology and Hepatology (NIGL) is a specialized government hospital located in the TB Gate area of Mohakhali, Dhaka. The hospital provides specialized healthcare services for patients with gastrointestinal, liver, and pancreatic diseases.

Recently, i had the opportunity to complete a three-month volunteer training program at this hospital through our academy. It was a valuable experience that allowed us to work closely with patients and gain practical knowledge in a real hospital environment.
During the training, our responsibilities included collecting and maintaining necessary patient information, understanding patients’ needs, providing appropriate support and assistance, and helping patients navigate the healthcare environment. Through these activities, we developed practical skills in patient communication, information management, teamwork, and patient support.
The hospital provides a range of specialized diagnostic and treatment services, including Endoscopy, Colonoscopy, ERCP, and FibroScan, along with emergency and ICU facilities.
What particularly impressed me during my three-month experience was the overall hospital environment, cleanliness, organization, and accessibility. Considering my personal experience throughout the training period, I would rate the overall environment 10/10.
This volunteer training was more than just a learning opportunity. It gave us a closer understanding of patients’ needs, the importance of effective communication, and the responsibilities involved in supporting patients within a healthcare setting.
I am also proud to share that I achieved the highest marks in our volunteer training program. This achievement made the experience even more meaningful and motivated me to continue developing my skills in patient support and healthcare.
I’m grateful for this experience and the practical skills we gained along the way. These lessons will certainly be valuable in our future professional careers.
