My story of helping a local business to increase their sales: local restaurants

Hello all local guides,

I hope you are doing well. I have just returned from a whole week mission to Preah Vihear province, one of my org’s target areas. The mission was about work, but also helped me to retrieve very important information & feedback from the local business I have added into Google Map back in 2020.

The owner - head of cook was answering me how busy his business is after I came last years

Many of you (who often read my post) might have known me before. I travelled around Cambodia very often and that has given me opportunities to go places that many people do not go or rarely visited. This is where I came to help for adding those areas or point of interests into Google Map. That’s also one of my favourite things to do on Google Map: to add new business/location (add missing place) into Google Map.

I visited the restaurant since August 2019 ( probably my first time). This package is only 7,000R (1.75$). I love his tamarind pickle and cucumber pickle. More than that - there is a ginger tea which is surplus to his dish.

The local business was the restaurant where I often go for breakfast and pack lunch when I am on a mission to Preah Vihear provincial town, named Kongkea Khmer Cuisine (Google map link, with few comments from the guests including myself in the review sections). The food is above standard, with yummy taste and also come with cleanliness. The restaurant was well known and popular among working classes people and local people but of course not to people from Phnom Penh city or elsewhere - unless they have been to Preah Vihear before or have some friends told them about this small restaurant. I cannot take full credits for their increases in sale because I added his business in Google Map but I was the first who put the business into Google Map. It is very easy for those who rely on Google Map to find places to eat or sleep when they are in the area.

The screenshot shows I edited on the map in Aug 2020 but I remember very well I asked him what’s the name of his place and also put his phone number in there in Google Map as the first.

Yesterday, when I revisited the restaurant and asked him about how his sale going, the business owner told me himself that it is increased and his restaurant is getting busy since I last visited. The new customers especially those who travelled from Phnom Penh and from high ranking office or ministry start to come here and even bring more clients to him. More importantly, he added more menus and then, added lunch menus and extended the business hours to 14:00 in the afternoon. Before, he only focused on selling breakfast and packed food.

Type of business

  • Cafeteria, family owned business with limited seats up to Max 20pax per time.
  • Price is very reasonable: 2$-3$/meal (rice, meat, sauce, soup, 2 types of vegetables pickles)
  • Food served: breakfast and lunch and packed. Food included all kind of marinade meats grilled or fried, come together with rice &soup, Beef or bacon noodle, as well as coffee. Lunch: on main dish plus fried dish/chicken or meat. He confessed he cannot make many dishes due to to time limitation and many customers waiting. He couldn’t hire more because those people cannot make food the taste he wanted.
  • Runs by a small family of 5: Father as a head cook, a mother as a cook assistant and 3 sons as waiters & receptionist/cashier. The family moved from Kompong Cham to settle here for many years.
  • Specials about this place: yummy food with fresh taste (authentic), friendly owners and clean dining areas. Instead of putting the kitchen at the back of the house like many others, here the kitchen is at the main entrance. You see how they cook it by your eyes.

They are very busy - I couldn’t stop their from doing their thing just for my photographs. I was talking to him while he was doing his job. Many people came to eat before Covid-19 but more packed after the Covid-19 spread.

Fresh and organic fish from the pond in the area

Grilled sausage, bacon and beef

People were waiting for their package

A wide range of meat and fish grilling for serving: fresh fish, marinade fish and bacon, beef and bacon sausage

The sign stated name of his place is almost unable to read. Normally, people would just look if there are many people at one restaurant it means the quality is better but in Covid-19 time, people don’t go out that much so you can not really guess the quality of the place by just seeing number of people. Google map very important role in this. I added this place “must visit” in Preah Vihear province.

Family business - team work

This business is small and was impacted by Google Map, let’s alone many other businesses throughout Cambodia that I helped added into Map. It made me so proud being the local guide. I told them how people gave so many positive comments about his place. It was from Google Map, the first time I asked him about the name and phone number, now people know you more. He was very happy, and appreciated what I was doing for him (even offered me to pack several fried :tropical_fish: )

I would like to share this happy moment with other local guides, your work impact many people: the business owners and the Google Map users.

Well done, @Sophia_Cambodia , these kinds of stories are the ones that make me feel proud to be a Local Guide.

When you contribute to help, and it doesn’t really matter if your photos will have 100 or 10,000 or a million views.

What you do is priceless

Thank you for your kind words of motivation @ErmesT it felt so special being able to help out.

I added many places I don’t even remember but this one I revisited many times so I got a chance to talk to him and communicate more frankly.

Hello @Sophia_Cambodia Thanks for tagging me to this nice post. Unfortunately, I am not regular here nowadays & without your tag, I would miss this post. Thanks for sharing this nice and helpful post. I am very much fond of eating fried fish and one photo in your post lured me to share the below one. I hope you like this one. Stay safe.
