My recent experience in taking photos of a restaurant

One of my favorite contributions to Google Maps are adding photos of places to Google Maps. Long back I used to take photos of each and every places I visit and add it to Google Maps but it became little difficult later that people or business owner asks on why I take photos and I tell them that I am a Local Guide and it will be helpful for people searching for places in Google Maps.

But throughout my Local Guide journey, I never had any bad experience on people behaving rudely and asking me why I take photos. They just ask me the reason and when I explain them, they were happy with it.

What I do usually is that I take photos of the dishes which I order in case of restaurants and in case of tourist spots, there will not be any problem in taking photos and that’s how I mostly do photo contributions to Google Maps.

In case if I want to take photos of the restaurant when there is less crowd, I ask permission from the Business owner/manager for taking photos of their place and telling them that I will be adding it to Google Maps by showing them my Google Maps Profile. This work for me everytime and they have been accepting my permission and then I take photos of the interior and exterior of the restaurant.

Today I visited a restaurant in Hyderabad and there was no crowd and after ordering my meal, I decided to ask permission from the store manager and did the same. The store manager accepted my request and told me to take many photos as I want. I then took the photos of the interiors and went to the entrance to take more photos. At that time, there was another person who came from the outside and shouted at me on why I am taking photos of the restaurant.

He pulled my phone and I was politely telling him that I got the permission from the store manager and I am taking photos to add it to Google Maps but he was not listening to me and not giving my phone back. I asked him to come inside and talk with the store manager and then the store manager told that he only allowed me to take photos and then he was okay and I showed him my Google Maps profile and he apologized and told me that some people take photos for illegal purpose and thats why he got angry. I told him that’s fine and then he told me to take more photos.

After taking some photos, my meal was ready and after having my meal, I told the Business owner to provide wheelchair accessible entrance so that it will be beneficial for the differently-abled people to visit the restaurant and he told that he will provide the same.

My reason for this post is that even after taking permission from the store manager or business owner, there are chances some people may behave rudely to us asking why we take photos of the place but we can explain them politely and I feel that showing our Google Maps profile is one the great ways in explaining people the reason we take photos of places. Getting permission first hand from the business owner or store manager will be very helpful in not getting into any trouble when taking photos of places.

It would be great if you can share any tips regarding taking photos of a place in the comments.

Take care, stay safe and Peace.

@SalmaanN , good advise for everybody. I also explain and ask permission from store/restaurant owner if I’m taking a wider shot. It’s allways safe to let your intention 1st so people won’t miss understand. Thanks for sharing your experience with us

Yes indeed there are times when asking first is the best strategy @SalmaanN . I wrote a post which I called Local Guides’ bad experiences about such situations.

My dear @SalmaanN ,

I have many such experiences…

However, here’s one of such incidents…

A couple of years back, I was shooting in Yercaud old town (where I stay)… I was standing on the road & capturing using my Sony camera with zoom lens. Suddenly a traffic police appeared in front of me (on a motorcycle), along with a local person… (The local person brought the police).

The police officer asked me what am I doing in a very polished Tamil… Whereas the local person was fuming in angry.

I explained the details, showing my shots and my Google Maps profile - The officer was very happy though the local person was unhappy.

The officer called a couple of people from different shops & he explained to them by standing by my side:

Now, you people decide… (Pointing at me) This person is a Google Local Guide… He is spending his valuable time and trying to help you… by taking the photos of your shop & posting it in Google Maps… Which helps you immensely…

I showed them a few shops in Google Maps where I have already uploaded the photos.

Then those people asked the local person to cool down…

Then they invited me to their shops & requested me to take photos of their interiors…

The police officer assured me all supports.

God’s grace, now I’m a popular LG in Yercaud & I could assist more than 100 small & medium businesses by adding them in Google Maps.

In another major incident, I could talk over the phone to convince the police to release 3 LGs who were arrested for taking photos.

There are many such interesting incidents…

Wish you all the best… Dear Salman & my friends…

Thank you so much for sharing your experiences, @TravellerG Sir. I am glad that the police officer got the clear picture and supported you. But the other incident were lgs got arrested looks very serious and I hope it got solved quickly. Below is the photo of yours and other local guides during the Meetup in Yercaud and that time also, people were wondering when we were taking photos.

Thanks again for sharing your experiences with us, Sir.

Wow… thank you very much for refreshing our memories through your beautiful photos…, Dear @SalmaanN … extremely happy to view the same… :+1:

Regarding LGs who got arrested…

One of them got my number from our Chennai Whatsapp group & called me desperately from the police station and explained me what happened…

Then he gave the phone to the police officer… God’s grace, I could convince him by explaining what they were doing. And luckily they gave a warning & sent the children out. (They were from Erode). The LGs would have been in the police station for not more than 1 hour.

Hope it is clear to you.

May be our @AdamGT Ji may also be interested to read this.

Warm regards…
