Hi,
My name is Peter Owiti, a level 8 local Guide from Kisumu community Kenya. I have been in the program for the past two years actively contributing both on google maps and in community activities. As a Digital skills trainer for the Google Digital Skills for Africa program, I travel a lot in between communities giving me an advantage to participate in different communities. I am happy to have made two communities active; Kisumu & Nakuru -by introducing and mentoring quite a number of youths on the program through community trainings & meet ups.
When it comes to mapping; I believe taking interior photos, giving detailed reviews and answering questions not limited to accessibility are key points to take into consideration as far as guiding is concerned. Have you ever asked yourself what makes your contribution stand out a part from just taking photos of a place? Well whenever I am contributing, I always make sure every detail is given through pictures, reviews, and answering questions. Taking interior photos, writing detailed reviews and answering questions has been my new quest this year making me to even revisit previously mapped places to give valuable contributions.
When you give active and valuable contributions on maps, there is definitely someone outside there who is ready to acknowledge and appreciate your efforts, thanks to Google Kenya for several invites to regional hosted events including “Google for Kenya” which was my favorite.
I am a ‘local guide,’ my primary duty is to guide others by giving them valuable information of places well known to me. See you around!
