Back then in my hometown, Banyuwangi. I think that finding vegetables like spinach, celery, and any other vegetables is really easy (also how to cook it too). Because my mom is doing that every single day for our daily meal. Actually not only vegetables tho, sometimes she cook traditional foods like rawon, rujak (local salad with peanut sauce), etc.
But now, as a student in the new city of Malang, I need to do all of that on my own to save a lot of money. Yes, sure, you can easily search vegetables like I mentioned above. But itās very boring to just eat spinach, spinach, and spinach. Like, come on, why is everyone selling the same items . I want to eat something that I usually did back home. And yes, that vegetables is called ākelorā. I donāt know what do we call it in English or your local language. Maybe you know the name of this veggie, shoot in the comments below.
At several times I asked to several groceries nearby whether they sell it or not, and they all answered the same thing, they didnāt sell that . My fellow students give me advice to go to one market called āPasar Blimbingā, and I know that it going to be pretty far (around 15 km roundtrip). Actually Blimbing District itself is the homebase of Batu Local Guides tho, so Iām not really surprised about the distance that Iām going to take.
Today, early in the morning, Iām heading towards Pasar Blimbing with my bike.
Even though itās a 7,5 km journey, but I think itās not that difficult, because the terrain is quite flat / descend. So I could reach top speed around 30 km/h . After 20 minutes ride, I arrived at the market. As usual, the traditional market is very crowded with a lot of local residents. Just like my previous question to the groceries, it happened again. They didnāt sell kelor. I looked around the whole market, from outside the building until deep inside and still having the same answer. Until when I decided, if Iām not find it, Iām going back home. A woman heared my conversation, came up, and told me to go a little bit to the north. Iām following her directions and finally met a store that sell kelor. Thank god! Actually this vegetable is quite cheap, 2000 rupiahs.
Alright then, now focus how to cook this thing. Itās really simple. First thing that you need to do is wash them. The second one is pick the leaf out of the branches. Meanwhile, you need to boil some water to save your time. After that, put the leaf into the boiled water and pour some sugar and salt. Wait until several minutes until perfectly cooked. And taraa, kelor is ready to served with a plate of rice and anything you like, for example: tofu, tempeh, etc.
Thatās it. Or you might give me a tip for a new cuisine that I need to try. Thank you so much for reading my story!
