My North Caucasus tour - Kislovodsk

I continue the story of my railway tour. After Grozny , Nalchik, Derbent, our train arrived in the city of Kislovodsk.

Kislovodsk is a resort city in the Stavropol Region of the Russian Federation. It is balneological and climatic resort. The city is the second in Russia (after Sochi) in terms of the number of health resorts and the largest in the North Caucasus.

Kislovodsk is located in the northern foothills of the Greater Caucasus at an altitude of 725-1200 meters above sea level. Originated from a Russian military fortress founded in 1803.

The city owes its origin and name to the source of acidic mineral water. The name Kislovodsk mean “a sour water city”. The city got its name due to the abundance of sources of Narzan, a carbonic mineral water, which in Russia has long been called “sour water”.

During the Second World War, the city was 5 months in the occupation of German troops. But the city was not subjected to great destruction during the capture, as it was a resort and a large hospital for wounded soldiers and officers, and at various times was actively used by both sides of the war. Therefore, many buildings of the 19th and early 20th centuries have been preserved in the city.

During the war, an amazing case of hoax occurred. Due to the rapid capture, Soviet troops did not have time to take out all the wounded from the hospitals of the city. Many of the wounded werehidden by local residents at homes, but the seriously wounded needed hospital care. There was no Red Cross presence in the USSR, but some of the doctors knew that the German troops were observing the convention and not touching the Red Cross hospitals. Therefore, in the shortest possible time, an ordinary military hospital was turned into a fake Red Cross hospital, and the occupying troops were deceived for several months. Probably many knew about the deception, the entire staff was under constant fear of exposure, but this managed to save several hundred lives of the wounded.

And today a huge number of tourists and vacationers come to Kislovodsk to improve their health with the help of clean air, mineral water, and recreation.

Another stunning town with such beautiful architecture and planning. Is the Narzan Gallery located far from Kislovodsk @SergeySud ? The greenery looks great but I bet the physical point of view is so much better. Thanks for sharing your journey.

Hi @HeyitsNicho . Thanks for your interest in my posts.

The Narzan Gallery is an architectural monument of the 19th century, located right in the city itself, at the beginning of the Resort Park, and everyone can come here on foot.

The Gallery was built in the style of “Gothic romanticism”, and in its shape resembled a keyhole, in the center of which there was a “key” - the source of Narzan. This is a play on the word “key” - in Russian it is both a key to a door and a mineral water spring. The English architect S. I. Upton was invited to build the Narzan Gallery. Most likely he literally understood the translation of the word.

Hi @Mukul_Anand

I use a Nikon D7100 DSLR camera with an 18-105 mm lens. This is a standard kit lens, nothing outstanding.

I shoot in Raw to be able to correct possible shooting mistakes and make corrections. I use Adobe Camera Raw plug-in for Adobe Photoshop that allows me to carry out comprehensive work with Raw files. Then in Adobe Photoshop, I crop photos, remove unnecessary perspective, and reduce the size for publishing on Connect.

An interesting shot.

A real river flows in the resort park of Kislovodsk. It’s Olkhovka river. The river is highly dependent on precipitation, sometimes turning into a raging stream, and brings a lot of rock fragments. One local artist comes to the park every day and builds these stone cairns. The stones are not fixed together by anything - no magic, no glue, or cement. Only the skill of the artist and balance.
