My Food Exploration (Part 1)- South Indian Restaurant

Hello Local Guides

Exploring different local cuisines is one of my favourite things to do as a local guide.

This is my first post sharing my food exploration. I would love to share about other places and types of food in upcoming posts.

I came across this South Indian Restaurant called South Tiffin House and was eager to try the food here.

I visited this place a few times.

The best part I liked about this place was the service and staff, they cleaned the tables with sanitizer after every use. Proper social distance was kept while making seating arrangements

I tried multiple dishes here and totally loved them.

  1. Malabar / Kerala parotta

This is one of the popular dishes in South India. It is a flat layered bread made with all purpose flour and served with mix vegetable curry which was made using coconut milk

  1. Tomato rice

This one is a bit different from the actual tomato rice but I loved the simplicity of this dish, it had tomatoes and peanuts in it served with papadam.

  1. Onion Uttapam and plain dosa

Classic and most popular onion uttapam is soft as a pancake but savoury and has onions and green chillies in it.

Plain dosa is a crisp thin dosa, it’s very light and filling.

  1. Ghee Pudi /podi Idli

Ghee is widely used in many south Indian dishes this one was mini idli tempered with ghee (clarified butter) and pudi masala which is a mix of different spices, curry leaves, shredded coconut and coriander addss refreshing taste.

  1. Bisi /Besi bele bhaat

This is one of my favourite dishes. It has a lot of flavour and spices. It is made using rice, lentils and veggies and a special spice mix which is made with roasted and crushed whole spices. It is served with plain curd, and masala boondi.

  1. Filter coffee ( kaapi)

This is the specialty coffee from south India.

It is made using a filter machine where they pour hot water to the ground coffee and make a decoction and it is added to hot milk and sugar, they pour it from one vessel to another a few times to make it frothy.

It is usually served in a brass glass along with a bowl. It’s very addictive.

Here is a Short video of filter coffee it’s from another place.

After that I tried a few more places around and made a map list to put up some amazing restaurants nearby who purely serve south Indian dishes.

I will keep adding more places as I explore them

Have you tried any of the above Dishes?

Which is your favourite place to have south Indian dishes?

Comment below and share your experience

Hello dear @FalguniP

Very, very familiar photos of well known food items of Kerala, Karnataka & Tamil Nadu.

Some dishes are typical & nowadays available in almost every state; but some dishes (like Malabar Porotta, Bisibelebat, etc. ) are exclusive /proprietary…

Excellent photos and nice narration… Congratulations!

Appreciate your efforts…

Eagerly awaiting the 2nd part…

Is it going to be South Indian or elsewhere?

All the best…

Very happy to see you active…

PS:

  1. Saw your short video on Filter Coffee on YouTube - good

  2. The 4 PoI maps List also is interesting…

Have you tried any South Indian dishes?

@TravellerG thank you for appreciating.

I agree other dishes like dosa, idli and uttapam are quite common but

Besi bele, Malabar parotta are available only in few restuarants here.

There are also some restaurants who serve Kerala based cuisines I would love to explore that soon.

For the next part I will be covering some other cuisine.

Thank you once again

Thanks for your response, dear @FalguniP

One of the very special Kerala items is Puttu & Katala.

The different combinations used area:

  1. Puttu with plantains

  2. Puttu with oil-fried Kerala Pappadam

  3. Puttu with sugar

  4. Most famous = Puttu with Katala (Carb with Protein)

Also, any mixed combination also will taste fine.

Remember to drink an adequate volume of water/juice as Puttu makes you thirsty.
