Hi,
I am Rajib from India. Since my birth I am living in a city called Howrah. This city is the twin city of West Bengals capital city Kolkata. Howrah is a city with more than 500 years of existence. This city knows all my first thing, my first school, my love, my profession everything. This is my passion to introduce my best loved city of the world to the rest of the world.
the most ordinary sweet shop in my locality produces very good quality sweet card ( a preparation from cow milk) not much people knows this. I introduced this shop through google map, when somebody in the feedback thanks me for that effort, it really excited me a lot.
This city though it is located beside Kolkata is separated with river Ganges. Earlier time communication was very difficult between this two cities and people of Howrah used to live a typical down town live usually we see in other Indian district. Like people whenever got a job shifted to Kolkata or near to their work place, at mid day all the road are empty as people are taking mid-day rest, no restaurant, all road side building have some kind of shop in their building etc. etc.
This thing got changes drastically from mid 90s. the 2nd hoogly bridge which was under construction for ages got open for public use to make communication with Kolkata faster easier and a matter of only 15 minutes. This opens a new era in the history of Howrah. A social revolution took place. More and More people realizes the ease of taking modern facilities. Shopping malls comes out in a big number. Kids stop studying in the local schools instead they opted to go to the big schools of Kolkata, creates of opportunity for the education institution to open up their branches in the city. Now the social topology of the city has changed.
Acknowledging this change in the communication as well as social topography the sate secretariat, office of the Chief Minister, has now been shifted to Howrah from its very traditional building known as writers building.
The most prime heritage of this old city is Botanical Garden which is known as Indian Botanical Garden and officially known as Achariya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden. Varities of tress of various countries are available here. The main attraction of this garden is the very old banyan tree, the circumference of these tree is 330 mtrs and considered to be the biggest tree of the world. This tree is so old that nobody knows which one is its original steam it is now having more than 1000 branches to support and feed this tree. The garden is having good landscape and as it is situated on the banks of river Ganga, it is very pleasant to seat beside the river on a bench and watch the Shirin buty of river and the passing of various big sizes cargo ships, which are going to Garden Reach dock. E rickshaw ride is also available inside the garden premises.
Very close to this Garden is situated the first Engineering institution of India Earlier known as Bengal Engineering College presently it is known as Indian Science and Technology University. Though it is not a tourist spot but the college premises is very very attractive and is one of the best example of British Architecture. It is having two very good quality cricket stadium in the college premises named as oval and Lords. It would not be over exaggeration if someone compares field quality of these two fields with that of their famous British counter parts.
Oh I forget the icon to be mentioned yet, yes it is no other than the great Howrah Bridge. This bridge was made when India was about to get its freedom from its long years of Foreign rule with an Indian lead Engineer and with the steel manufactured in India. The attitude of a newly emerging Country. The attitude remain unchanged even today. If you see this bridge from bottom its vast ness, its robustness its elegance its engineering will definitely lure you. Definitely you will not get any opportunity to take your selfi here as the bridge is one of the most busiest bridges of the world and directly connects the main whole sale market for eastern india called Bara Vazar.
The other area what I would introduce you to the world is the palce called Ramrajatala. This temple is dedicated to worship Lord Rama. Temple is more than 300 years old. Puja starts from mid-April and continues till July end. All this month fair continues adjuscent to this temple and considered as an integral part of this worship. This is undoubtedly the first experience of fair for every child living in this locality for generations now.
