My birth place

I am proud of the place of my birth, THE CITY OF JOY - CALCUTTA in West Bengal, India. This is a CITY OF MAY “FIRSTS” for example it boasts of India’s first cantilever bridge " Howrah Bridge " built by the British during the East India Regime. It still stands strong with maintenance from Howrah end by the Howrah Municipality to the one half and the other half by the Calcutta Corporation towards the Calcutta side. This city boasts of Tramways even today though on the truncated routes. This city got the first METRO services on a single route from Tollygunge to Esplanade and has diversified now. The city has a white marble monument named Victoria Memorial with four minarets and a high dome and has exhibits of the soldiers arms, attire, paintings and the royal furniture of the British regime in Calcutta. This city boasts of a vast botanical garden in adjacent Howrah on the other side of river Hoogly which has the oldest Banyan Tree and many other things of interest to the Botany students. It has a very big ZOO which got the first batch of white tigers which when cross bred with lion and Bengal tigers brought into existence the TIGON breed. The city gave its students community the General Museum, the Industrial Science Museum with hands on experiments for better learning and the Planetarium. One cannot forget the mouth watering “Puchkas”, “Jaal Mudi”, “Bhand Chai”, “Aaloo Dham & Ghuggni” which are easy to find and quick filling and easy on pocket. Much has changed over time BUT even now when I visit I don’t miss these cheap and best savories. The city had man pulling RICKWHAWS with 2 person seating and pulled by a man, similar to ones you see in China, but over a period of time they have been taken off the roads in some busy areas though you can see a few still on the streets. THE CITY FOLKS CELEBRATES DURGA PUJA WORSHIPPING THE GODDESS DURGA & KALI PUJA FOR GODDESS KALI ON A MASS SCALE. Kali Temple in Kalighat & Dakhineshwar remains crowded with unaccountable footfalls to pray and get blessed. Apart from the big retail outlets and malls the “STREET SHOPPING” in specified areas like Gariahat, Dharamtala and Kalighat to name a few are a craze to buy on bargains. A CITY WHICH REMAINS ALWAYS NEW TO ANYONE ON MULTIPLE VISITS WITH TIRELESS & ENCHANTING INNOVATIONS TOWARDS “ART”, “THEATER” “SPORTS”, “MUSIC” AND WHAT NOT!!! Can never get tired of this CITY even when visited umpteen number of times. I love you CALCUTTA the city of my birth.
