I am back with this new series on Museum Tour. In this series I will take you first through one of the oldest museums in Delhi – National Museum. Lets explore this museum through my lens and pen keyboard .
This museum was established in the year 1949 and since then the development of its building took place in two phases namely in the year 1960 and 1989. At present, The Ministry of Culture, Government of India administratively controls this museum.
National Museum has the collection of art objects of historical, cultural and artistic significance with a purpose to display, protect and preserve them. This museum is well known for its academic purposes as well where students and researchers come and sharpen their understanding about the significance of these art objects.
Cultural and historical achievements of Harappan Civilisation and The Indus-Saraswati River Valley Civilization are depicted in the art gallery in great details.
Important religious figures of Jain religion aligned to Jainism tradition are displayed depicting the images of Tirthankara.
There is a beautiful gallery which displays the gold ornaments from Takshila. In those days very heavy and traditional ornaments were used. Some of these gold ornaments like heavy Necklace, Armlet, Torque (Hansuli) can also be witnessed now which are preserved by our grandparents.
A dedicated art gallery is there to display and preserve the ancient cutleries, Hookah and the games in an art form. Games like Chess board is made with glass bead work and Chaupar spread is made of cotton cloth, mirror and silk thread.
There is a separate gallery on Hindi literature where the inception and importance of Hindi language is explained. This section also has the historical development of Hindi as a language and the photo gallery of its promoters.
A unique gallery which explains the inception and development of Indian coins. One can have the insight into a progressive journey from coins to credit cards. It is believed that the ancient Indians were one of the earliest issuers of coins in the world.
Marine Heritage Gallery represents the importance of various awards, ships and related equipments used to showcase marine bravery during the difficult times.
A bright and vibrant gallery full of Thanjavur and Mysore Paintings.
