Museu do Mar Rei D. Carlos I, or in English, Museum of the Sea dedicated to King Carlos I, the father of the last king of Portugal, D. Manuel, and lover of the sea, is located in the former Sporting Club de Cascais, which was founded in 1879 by the then Crown Prince D. Carlos. After being transformed into a museum, it was opened to the public on 7 June 1992.
The entire exhibition is about biodiversity in motion across the ocean. It talks about the people of the sea in Cascais, a province in the very south of Portugal, and reveals a reality that is very present in the village, the songs and life stories of the fishermen, the regattas and the memories of Cascais through interactive multimedia applications, replicas of marine animals such as sharks, whales, turtles and a life-size sunfish. Visitors can play on a typical fishing boat or appreciate some period clothes and see how they lived. There are also some interesting remains of shipwrecks found from excavations that were collected from the bottom of the sea in Cascais. The museum also has a valuable collection of marine fossils that take us to the origins of life on our planet and to the maritime environment. And how funny it is to be able to compare the teeth of a white shark with those of the mythical Megalodon!!
Through his 12 campaigns and the role they played in the national and international context, King D. Carlos played a significant role in the development of oceanographic studies and the Museum demonstrates the important role that he played.
The exhibition information is available in Portuguese and English and the Museum is wheelchair accessible.
There is a small shop in the museum to buy gifts, t-shirts, books and promotions.
The garden is huge and has trees so you can rest in the shade or even have a small snack under the tree. It is an amazing spot to know and spend some time with kids, family and friends, and I recommend it to you should you visit the part of Portugal.

I visited the Museum of the Sea in September 2020 with two American friends and the cover photo is a photo I took during that visit. The photo shows the front facade of the museum and the garden. I took this photo using my Samsug S20 phone and it’s my star photo entry on the Top 100 Star Photos Leaderboards.
