Muir Woods National Monument Nature Preserve in Mill Valley, California
Ever since I saw Cesar the fictional character in the Rise of the Planet of the Apes movie swinging through the trees with his colony this place has been on my Bay Area list of places to visit. The entrance sign also made a cameo appearance in the movie. Nestled deep within the Marin County mountains this outdoor place did not fail with its record-high redwood trees and wooden paved path throughout the historical landmark. Lots of families with strollers as well as out-of-town traveling visitors seem to arrive here to enjoy the outdoor walking area. Mandatory reservation only parking in the parking lot can get tight so I highly recommend taking the paid shuttle service from Sausalito into the park. Wear your good walking shoes and have your camera ready for stunning nature photos. You will be keenly surrounded by clean air, creeks, a variety of very tall redwood trees, flat walking trails, birds, butterflies, flowers, Forest Rangers, informational plaques and peaceful greenery. There is no internet service so have anything you may need printed out before arrival or you will be stuck, trust me on this.
