Mui Wo Silvermine Water Falls

I have visited Hong Kong every 3 to 4 Months for the last 4 years. December was my last trip, until another time.

All this time I wanted to visit Mui Wo, because it was a place I had to discover. I set on my journey to go to this little town, located in the shores of Lantau Island. Lantau Island has the best hills to hike in all of Hong Kong. For a man of my weight, I can hike and out do many. It was a great walk from the Ferry Station to the Water Falls.

The day I visited, the weather was favorable. A mild breeze, sun and nature, kept me walking. I saw old houses, temples and a dilapidated structure that once served a latrine. A mix of old and new, can be seen through. A old temple, next to a house that is being remodeled for some expats. When I got to the falls, it was a bit disappointing. I was expecting more water, more sights. It was not what I expected.

After a hydration break, I decided to keep going up hill. I ended up in what was once the Silver Mines. It is now sealed off. Made me wonder how the workers got up there, day after day. Humid conditions, rain and other weather elements, must have been a daily challenge. I kept my feet going, because I needed to see more, and yet be back to the main path before sunset. It would not be fun to be in the woods in the dark, with out a proper flashlight.

The falls were not what I expected, but the hike, made up for it. If you do go. Please bring drinks and snacks and a flashlight. Once you leave the main road, there is not place to buy drinks or snacks.
