Located in Kilome, Makueni County of Kenya sits Mt. Kalembwani. It rises over 5,000 feet and is a volcanic cone. It is a moderate to difficult hike. It is owned by the community and the guides involved are from the area. When going for this hike, it is inevitable that you will also have to hike Kiou hills, which sit on the opposite side of the road, adjoining the Ngokomi market. Kiou hills trail is steeper compared to that of Kalembwani and therefore a difficult one considering the large rock boulders that dot the trail path.
If you are interested in botanical matters, this trip is a treasure-trove of the various plant species and their uses based on the indigenous knowledge passed down from generation to generation. I got to see new plants that I had never seen before in this terrain. Luckily for us, we went in the month of May and it had rained earlier.
The locals are friendly and helpful as you trek the paths of this area. The guides, depending on how much you engage them, will explain the intricate details of the hostilities between the Kamba and Maasai people that existed in the olden days and the fights that took place because of cattle rustling. The Kamba people would use Kiou hills as a natural fortification during the wars that would take place.
