I’m a born-and-bred South African; my country is rich with culture, history and entrepreneurship! One of my favorite things to do on a weekend is to explore local sights and support local businesses. I’ve done my fair share of moving around, as I have itchy feet, and sniffing out hidden gems have always been a talent. And it’s surprisingly easy as there are so many unique experiences available.
A typical weekend would start off with breakfast at a local coffee roaster I’ve found on Google Maps. Taking a stroll through the beautiful Botanical Gardens for some fresh air before exploring the nearby corner bar for an ice cold locally brewed beer.
Heading to a recommended restaurant for a delicious dinner where the waiter is also the owner’s son and his farther is in the kitchen. Sunday is beach day and stocking up with snacks and drinks from the homemade goods market is essential, no one makes better olives than this Portuguese brother-sister duo.
Supporting each other is a truly South African trait. With so many small businesses and a large entrepreneurial spirit the best way to support a friend is to tell others about their business. Bars, restaurants, markets and beach spots are among some of my favorites. Giving a shout out and sharing experiences is my way of showing appreciation.
Writing reviews for small businesses also means that I help the local community. Drawing people to one point will also influence others around the area. Lastly, I know that being in a new town and not knowing where to go and what to see can be a waste of precious exploring time.
Spreading the love in support or in adventure means creating a stronger sense of community, we are all better together.
