#monthlytopic, January 2021.Old Russian drinks.

Hello dear local guides

This post is inspired by Connect Moderator @HiroyukiTakisawa

On the first photo you can see mors, on the second-Kissel, on the third-Russian tea from Samovar.

Today I want to tell you about old Russian drinks.

This is kissel, kvass, compote, mors, sbiten, mead and of course tea. What is drunk in Russia in hot weather in the summer-of course kvass, mors., compote.

Kvass is an old Russian drink. It is perfectly refreshing in hot weather and is drunk cold. The main raw material for making kvass at home is black rye bread (crackers). In the old days, kvass was brewed in almost every house, in inns, and monasteries.Monastery kvass is the most delicious. Now kvass is brewed in the beverage industry. Kvass recipes were passed down from generation to generation.

Mors is a drink made from juice, diluted with water with added sugar. Mors can be prepared from a variety of berry and fruit juices, fresh berries and fruits. They drink it chilled. More often, cranberry juice and lingonberry juice are prepared .Take one glass of cranberries, 0.5 cups of sugar, 1 liter of water. Bring to a boil., cool. You can also make it out of apples. Apples take sour.

Сompote is made from fresh or dried fruits and berries.

In the cold and winter season, of course, we drink tea ,jelly, sbitni and hot honey drinks.
Kissel, it was still called “syt” in Russia and served at the end of the dinner. There was an expression “I ate until I was full” Before in Russia prepared milk jelly, oatmeal jelly, now at this time jelly is prepared from berries and fruits. Kissel is prepared as follows: take the juice from the berries, add sugar syrup. Starch is diluted with cold berry juice, then carefully pour it into boiling berry syrup.Cook for 5 to 10 minutes, stirring with a spoon. Cool down .

And finally— a very ancient Russian drink, and very useful, which have already forgotten, but still you can see it in Russian cafes and restaurants with traditional Russian cuisine and Orthodox monasteries. This is SBITEN.

Sbiten is made from honey and spices, herbs. The drink is served hot on the table already distinguished in the cups. Sbiten is called "Russian gluhwein " It is drunk in cold, frosty weather to keep warm. For the preparation of sbitney in the syrup of sugar and honey put various spices and herbs, boil, filter and serve on the table. Spices can be different-oregano, wormwood, mint and other aromatic herbs. Every house in Russia in ancient times had its own recipe for sbitnya and kept it a secret. Sbiten was very much loved by our ancestors in the old days. The main thing for sbitnya was HONEY.
Sbiten is simple: sugar-150g, honey-200g, ,cinnamon, cardamom, mint. In hot water, sugar is dissolved, boiled, honey and spices are added. Bring to a boil. Drink it hot.

Sbiten is fragrant .Honey-500g, hops, mint-10g, cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg. Boil the water, add all the ingredients and boil for 30 minutes.Serve hot.
Sbiten Kolomenskaya :flower honey, mint, linden flowers, thyme, St. John’s wort, oregano, lemon balm, cloves, ginger, allspice, cinnamon, water.
We also drink hot honey drinks. Mead is a slightly alcoholic drink that was prepared in Russia, the city of Suzdal is famous for mead.

I would be glad to read your comments and questions.

Best wishes from Russia,

Hello @helga19 . The drink kissel is new to me. Probably this is the first time, I am reading about it. I could see it is bottled as well. It just made me curious. Whenever I am in restaurant, I will just ask for it or perhaps look for it in the supermarket.

Its preparation might take time some efforts and time with the way I am looking at it.

Hello @Emmik20

I am glad that you watch my post. Thank you.

I answer to your question -Kissel, or in Russian Кисель is thick dessert, like yogurt. You can not buy Kissel in a bottle, only in glass.

You can try kissel in a restaurant with Russian national cuisine. You can also buy it in the supermarket.

Try to find it, and write me about your impressions)

Did you taste Сбитень or Медовуха?

This drinks is good for cold and frost winter.

Take care,

Although we are not very familiar with your Kvass, Mors, Сompote, Kissel, Sbiten, etc., some of them sound a little friendly.

For these, you have made a reference itself - Congratulations.

For us, all that you have written is NEW.

“”…There was an expression “I ate until I was full…” - we too use this…

Thanks for sharing, dear friend @helga19

Thank you dear friend @BudiFXW

for your comment and interest to my post.

You are quiet right, red colour is dominant in this drink.

These drinks are made of fruits red colour - :cherries: cherry, :apple: apples, red current, plumps, cranberry.

Traditional old Russian drinks are red colour.
