Milk is the most traditional product for Belarus, it is used from the ancient times when cow was one of the main bread-winners of any family. Now when so many people live in cities the production of dairy products mainly takes place in large dairies, where milk comes from state-owned collective farms. Recently, home production has become more and more popular, but there are few places where you can buy such products in Minsk. For example, you can visit the Komarovsky market or contact manufacturers directly through social networks.
But now I will show you usual products any city dweller buys in shop regularly. In my case it was Gippo supermarket.
Pure milk and other beverages made from it: such as kefir (the kind of fermented milk made with the help of special kefir bacteria), ryazhenka (fermented milk drink made from baked milk), yogurt and so on.
Together with milk we can’t imagine our life without sour cream. It is used in salads, as an additions for borsch-soup, pancakes, berries, in cooking and so on:
Cottage cheese. We eat it pure or cook different dishes from it. Cottage cheese may be pure grained cottage cheese, or soft grated creamy cottage cheese.
Amazing post on milk products @OlgaKlimchik on an amazing monthly topic. Indeed, milk is something that can make you almost everything. It is a great source of protein, calcium, and minerals. Talk about dessert or savory, milk can make you pretty much everything.
Thank you for sharing. Your post just reminded me that I wanted to participate in this monthly topic too, but I just forgot. Sorry about that @HiroyukiTakisawa .
@Izumi Real home-made ryazhenka is made by fermentizing of baked milk with sour cream. So it’s so thick that it can hold a spoon and even has the golden brown crust. Resulting from the method of preparetion you may imagine the taste: it’s not so sour as kefir or sour milk, there is a taste of baked milk and milk fat from sour cream and milk cream. You may see the photos of home-made ryazhenka here and even translate some recipes and try to make it at home.
Ryazhenka from the shop is not so fat as home-made one, no any crusts, it’s as liquid as kefir and more sour that it should be, though it’s also tasty too.
Thank you for sharing this! I have never heard Ryazhenka but it looks tasty. Probably Izumi imaged a similar taste as me. 飲むヨーグルト、right?
I guess cheeses of Belarus is cheaper than ours. I’m jealous
No prob, @SoniaK ! You can post about dairy products and join us anytime as you like.
I can’t say about heaven. @Ewaade_3A , but dairy products historically took extremely important place in our life. We can’t imagine our daily life without milk, sour-cream, cottage cheese and usual cheese. All these products are regular on our table.
Woooow. I wish I had as much dairy as that. DAIRY IS A LUXURY here is South-western Nigeria. Not so much in Northern Nigeria since they breed livestock @OlgaKlimchik
