One of the most bizarre facts of México is that the oldest vineyard or Wine House in the whole contintent can be found in a semidesertic region in a small town called Parras de la Fuente, Coahuila, México.
Casa Madero is the name of the Oldest Wine House in the continent. Founded in 1597 Casa Madero represents an emblem to Coahuila; to México and all the new American vineyards.
Parras de La Fuente a small, picturesque town 1 hour and a half from Torreón Coahuila or 2 hours form Monterrey has become a home for at least 5 fine winehouses, Being the most important: the oldest one. When i was younger ( enough to drink wine, that is) in the year 2000 Casa Madero exported 95% of their product all around the world, 19 years later their production as well as the other vineyards are focused as well on the National market, this gave an opportunity to spread the wine culture around Coahuila, Nuevo Leon, and other mexican northern states.
As different type of wines are coming to the region great food stands by its side, and by that i mean that back in 2000 when i left Torreón to study my college degree in Mexico City, there was no greater food in Coahuila than a good Rib Eye. Even though i don´t complain the food offer in Coahuila was limited.
Now in Torreón for example there are at least 6 gourmet restaurants (among 200) with diferent types of high-end couisine. I don´t know about you but eating great food with great wine makes me feel better.
So for the last 5 years wine has been slowly making its way to the local culture and along with that way: my favorite type of dinners. “Wine Pairing Dinners” or “Cenas Maridaje”… This kind of dinners are a perfect mixture of learning the history and charecteristics of the wine you are drinking with the history of the dish you are eating. This is absolutely fantastic because this brings culture to a part of Mexico that was anxious to taste contemporary mexican food, ( and as you read you may think of chimichangas, Taco Bell or quesadillas… that´s not mexican food that is tex-mex food) i´m talking about real courses, mixing a typical dish from Yucatan or Chiapas and adding something rom the central Mexico. In the last year i have attended more than 10 Cenas Maridaje, all sponsored by a wine house, somo o them local and some of them from Baja California, all of them fantastic, and totally sold. This dinners have at least 5 courses with 5 different wines of the same vineyard, The last one i went the wine was from " Casa Don Leo" ( a fine vineyard in Parras) and we had a celebrity Chef named Jesus Gibaja, famous for his contemporary food. You can check out the menu in my reviews of “Maia Restaurant” in Torreón, as well as the 7 course menu. Having a dinner with wine with my friends is an every week activity for most of you, but haing this kind o dinner forge really great memories, try them. Most of them are announced localy in Facebook events or Instagram adds, you won´t regret it. And if you are with your beloved one Red wine is a really good afrodisiac
I you are in the US or Europe try Casa Madero Wines they have won several international recognitions as the best wines in the world. See ya!!!
