Thanks for your reply message @Erik_van_den_Ham . What program are you using add captions to the EXIF of your photos before uploading to Maps? My procedure is fairly simple and straightforward and sometimes works:
I upload photos onto Google Photos (synced from cellphone, and manually uploaded from other devices such as camera)
I write description to photos in the photos info/description field
On desktop I add photos to Maps reviews by selecting photos from Google Photos (Add a photo > Your Photos > select photos)
The only frustrating thing is that sometimes this procedure works and sometimes it doesnât but the fact that it does sometimes work suggests to me that there is some sort of intermittent software bug which should be able to be fixed fairly easily.
Hi @AdamGT I use Lightroom and as far as I can see the caption is always displayed on maps (heavenât seen any bugs).
The desktop version is weird anyway. If you start writing a review and add pictures direct you can add caption to the pictures uploaded. But non of these added caption will show on maps.
Thanks again @Erik_van_den_Ham I will need to do some research/experimentation. As I mentioned I use Google Photos (mainly because I use this to store my photos in albums and share these with family and friends). My thinking is that when we upload a photo to Google Photos the caption in the EXIF Metadata is loaded into that photoâs description field. If we edit that description field while in Google Photos and then download the photo, that edit is not reflected in the photoâs EXIF Metadata as the photoâs original caption field remains unchanged. So this suggests that a photo is uploaded into Google Photos the EXIF Metadata caption is copied from the photoâs EXIF Metadata into the Google Photos database and thereafter the nexus between that photoâs description and EXIF Metadata is broken. So my thinking is that when you upload a photo to a Maps review from your a folder on your PC (after you have added a caption say in Lightroom) the system takes the photoâs caption from the EXIF Metadata. However, when you upload a photo to a Maps review from Google Photos the system takes the photoâs caption from the Google Photos database description field, and not from the EXIF Metadata and the text of which might well be different. This is all good but doesnât explain why sometimes the system doesnât upload the Google Photos database description field to Maps reviews!!!
Interesting discussion. I wonder if any of the problems in Adamâs last posting a little over nine months ago were solved by local guides or Google personnel?
I, too, use either my PC desktop or Apple Mac Pro laptop to upload photos from Google photos and am frustrated by the inability to add captions to Review photos. Some photos are self-explanatory to the sighted visitor. Still, others add to the review but are not necessarily self-explanatory, i.e., trees, ornamental plants, animals, and are certainly a lost opportunity.
