Miss going out to grab a coffee and some freshly baked pastries

At the moment most of us are in a state of lockdown. In some countries it is total lockdown whereas in others people can still move around. Gradually the world is trying to make sense of what is happening around us with the coronavirus pandemic. In the recent days they eased the lockdown in New Zealand and some of the first activities people participated in was to grab a coffee. We have become so used to the fact that it is just always available.

What will be the first thing you do after the lockdown ends? Where will you go? Which activities are you missing the most? I definitely miss freshly baked pastries and just to sit in a coffee shop and smell the fresh coffee mixed with something baking in the kitchen. The simple things in life or perhaps for some it isn’t accessible. Makes one appreciate the lives we live.

In order to satisfy my hunger for something nice I decided to try it out in the kitchen… quite a nice challenge indeed…

First try palmier pastry, something my friends from Angola and Portugal love in the mornings. It needs some work still, I need more sugar but soon we will get there. This was a simple task as one is allowed to buy the puff pastry in a shop, although I suggest making your own… then it is truly homemade.

To make sure we use everything in the house I spotted some bananas that were turning black and brown therefore I just had to try baking a banana bread with cinnamon and ginger to spice it up a bit!

Hopefully soon I can go out and return to the city of Cape Town where I can choose a small business to support. One such place is a beautiful coffee shop called Villa 47. It is located on the edge of the city with a wonderful view over the street.

As we see more and more countries looking to gradually take us all out of lockdown let’s think of businesses we can support now going back. Let’s be mindful of the fact that the places we used to frequent had been hit the hardest through the period of lockdown. Make time for the business owners and make time for the staff. Make sure they know you appreciate them.

Make sure to try out some baking in the meantime!!

Hello @DanielJohn ,

Welcome to Connect!

Thank you for sharing your beautiful photos. I completely understand how you feel. I like to have my first cup of coffee for the day early in the morning right after I get up but the second one, usually I used to meet with a friend or have it with a colleague in the office. This is probably the first thing I would do after the lockdown is over. And when it comes to baked pastries, I am not saying that I don’t like them but if I have a chocolate cake in front of me, I will chose it every time. :slightly_smiling_face:

Hi @DanielJohn

I aslo missing going out for coffee, we are allowed to go to restaurants but mantaining social distanciang but I don’t quite feel safe going out. So we still buy pastries from our local pastry shop or sometimes I bake myself some and make some coffee at home. Some days I go to the garden and drink coffee there so I can get some fresh air and it feels nice. The pastries in your photos look great, they made me hungry :yum:

Thank you for the reply. Yes, we begin to miss the small things in life. Lockdown here is rather strict. But hopefully over the next month it will begin to go back to normal slowly again… then again… the new normal. Hope you get to bake something nice today.
